Description
Science is the human process that involves studying, explaining, and predicting the natural phenomena that occur in the universe. Science can be divided into several categories depending on the focus they take and whatever aspect of the universe they study. The Formal Sciences, such as Mathematics and Logic, differ from the others in that they don’t depend on empirical observation; the Natural Sciences study the material universe, and include Biology, Physics, and Chemistry; and the Social Sciences focus on the study of people and society.
In order to understand and explain the universe around them, Scientists follow the scientific method in all of their research and experiments. Most of their work and research is conducted by experimentation and data collection, and it is through the results of said experiments and the analysis and interpretation of data that Scientists are able to explain and predict the behaviour of all the components of the universe.
The Scientific community includes professionals from several different disciplines that use their skills and knowledge for the benefit and further advancement and development of the human race. Their work is mostly found in two different settings, inside, in laboratories, academic institutions, or other research facilities; or outside, in the field collecting samples and data for further studies.

Scientists are usually responsible for the following:
- Conducting tests and experiments to understand how the universe works.
- Collecting data on various research fields through investigation or observation.
- Analyzing and interpreting collected data and results of experiments.
- Understanding the behaviour of the elements that compose the universe.
- Studying the life, components, and behaviour of living organisms.
- Designing and developing specialized technology to further aid in future experiments, investigation, and research, or to further advance and facilitate human life.
- Advising governments and private industries on the proper exploitation of natural resources, how to make the most of them, and how to minimize the impact of human activity on the natural environment.
- Establishing scientific parameters to further explain natural phenomena.
- Sharing their discoveries, research, and findings with the scientific community by publishing papers, holding professional conferences, and liaising with colleagues.
All professionals working in the Scientific field usually share the same characteristics, which include, but are not limited to:
- Possessing extensive knowledge of their particular branch of Science, Mathematics, and the scientific method.
- Having strong computer and numerical skills.
- Displaying excellent communication skills.
- Having an analytical mind with critical-thinking, attention to detail, and acute problem-solving skills.
- Possessing good time-management and organizational skills.
- Having an adaptive personality and a drive to constantly engage in further research and to stay updated about the newest advancements in Science.
The scientific world is in constant movement with new discoveries and advancements made almost every day. Job opportunities in this field are widely available in several different environments. Scientists are employed in many different establishments, including government agencies and offices as advisors; private industries and companies as technology developers; and in academic institutions for research and educational purposes.
Academic experience and accreditation are essential in the world of professional Scientists. Like with most professions, they start out with a bachelor’s degree in the branch of Science they feel the most inclined towards and, from then on, they are greatly encouraged to pursue a vast and long academic career. In order to advance in their professional lives, Scientists are often required to earn a master’s degree or a doctorate in their respective fields. This process can take up to 5 years but it serves as experience when applying for better and higher-ranking jobs. Many companies and government agencies validate a master’s degree or a doctorate as years of professional experience.
