The operating life of a CANDU reactor can be extended by replacing reactor core components such as fuel channels, calandria tubes and feeder components.
Typically specialized processes which utilize automated tooling systems are used to execute this work. SNC Lavalin Nuclear is currently engaged in several CANDU reactor life extension projects with a scope that includes construction management of the field execution work, the management of tooling, resident engineering activities, training, and other field execution related activities.
As a result, SNC Lavalin Nuclear is seeking to immediately fill multiple positions within our life extension projects related to the technical management and coordination of CANDU reactor fuel channel, calandria tube and feeder replacement activities.
The successful candidate(s) will work in close consultation with other junior and senior engineering and technical staff and will have responsibilities that may include the following.
Lead or assist with the design, testing, modification, commissioning and use of specialized tooling systems, machines and test apparatus for CANDU reactor fuel channel, calandria tube and feeder replacement operations
Lead or assist in the assessment and testing of CANDU reactor replacement tooling systems to evaluate effectiveness
Lead or assist in the preparation of technical documents, drawings, specifications and reports related to specialized tooling used to support the CANDU reactor component replacement process
Lead or assist in the commissioning, testing and field implementation of CANDU reactor replacement tooling systems
Lead or assist in the training of tradespeople and shift supervisors in the commissioning, operation and maintenance of specialized tooling used to support the CANDU reactor component replacement process
Coordinate CANDU reactor component replacement field work with tradespeople and shift supervisors
Prepare progress reports and other project management support documents
Perform duties in a radiation environment in a CANDU reactor when required
Degree in mechanical or a related suitable engineering discipline from a University or technical college of recognized standing;
Minimum of 4 years of relevant technical experience and expertise in the commissioning, maintenance and operation of all of the following specialized CANDU reactor component replacement tooling systems : Feeder removal and installation;
Feeder welding and weld inspection;Bellows and pressure tube cutting;Fuel channel end fitting removal;Fuel channel installation.
Experience with general mechanical system design, commissioning and maintenance activities;
Familiarity with the design of a broad range of mechanical components (more than 10) and their design elements relevant to the manufacturing, technology or energy generation industries;
Proven initiative and motivation;
Must be effective in a multi-discipline team environment;
Results oriented, takes ownership of tasks assigned and meets commitments;
Must be able to work to specific deadlines and financial controls;
International field experience in the large scale (more than 380) replacement of reactor components in a CANDU reactor is mandatory.
