Job Description

    Reporting to the Director, Public Health, as an integral part of the public health leadership team, the Population Health Epidemiologist performs epidemiological activities related to analyzing, interpreting and researching health-related characteristics of the population to identify the distribution of health, diseases, behaviours and conditions.

    The position participates, as part of the senior public health team, in developing population health surveillance strategies.


    Education, Training And Experience

    A level of education, training and experience equivalent to a PhD in Epidemiology or related discipline including leadership experience in an academic / research capacity.

    Skills And Abilities

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the health care setting, preferably in BC.
  • Ability to function independently, and direct staff engaged in epidemiological investigations.Knowledge of principles and methods of biostatistics and demography, principles and procedures of epidemiology research including design of population health surveys.
  • Knowledge of theory, practice and application of epidemiological methodologies, including methods used in specialized fields, including environmental health and communicable disease.

    Knowledge and experience in chronic disease epidemiology, including methodologies such as case mix adjustment, measurement of the burden of illness, injuries and risk factors.

    Knowledge of public health strategies, programs and practise.Extensive working knowledge of the health care system in BC and Canada, in particular the use of routinely collected data sets, including vital statistics and administrative data.

    Knowledge of the relevant legislation (eg. Health Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act)Ability to prepare statistics and analyze data as through the use of computer generated spreadsheets and statistical packages such as SAS and GIS.

    Ability to create and maintain effective relationships with coworkers, research organizations, community groups, etc.Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing including proposals and technical reports.
