The Director, Research will be based in Ballard's Burnaby Head office and will lead Ballard's Research Team. The Director, Research will be instrumental in the success of Ballard's business by leading and driving next generation technology development with the primary responsibility to support Ballard's strategy to be number one in the world with the best PEM fuel cell technology and products.
The successful candidate will lead a world class team of approximately 40 highly skilled research scientists, engineers, technologists and technicians, with significant in-depth knowledge of PEM fuel cell technology fundamentals.
The Director, Research is a key member of Ballard's senior leadership team, and will provide overall leadership and direction for Ballard's technology development activities, including a balanced portfolio of short, medium, and longer term Research activities between the Ballard Team and supported through external research collaboration with academia and other research partners.
The Research team plays critical roles to : generate intellectual property; deliver technology advances to next generation product designs;
and support customer driven R&D activities.
Excellent technology understanding, exceptional leadership and communication capabilities, and the ability to think and act both tactically and strategically are critical in this role.
Working with the Research leadership team, lead planning and execution of MEA and other fuel cell component research activities.
Continuously improve organizational capability, capacity, and excellence to carry out those activities.
Establish Research directions and strategies (e.g. strategic technology roadmaps) aligned with next generation product requirements, organization goals, and emerging world trends.
Model and ensure cross-functional collaboration with other Ballard functional groups to achieve Ballard corporate goals.
Work closely with members of the Senior Leadership Team on Ballard strategic directions and functional effectiveness.
Support Ballard Technology Solutions business with research capabilities.
Carry out the role and responsibilities of the position as identified in our defined business processes, e.g. Technology Development processes, and maintain the discipline of those processes in the organization.
Act as a role model for the Ballard cultural values.
Relevant science or engineering degree (Masters or PhD preferred)
12+ years of relevant experience, with 8+ years of senior level leadership in a Global research or technology development environment
Excellent technical capabilities with an in-depth knowledge of PEM Fuel Cell technology fundamentals
Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
Proven track record of leading research activities delivering enhanced fundamental understanding, effective research tools, intellectual property, and product improvements
Broad understanding of fuel cell product applications and requirements, and the proven ability to identify and develop the associated technology improvements
Willingness and ability to accept responsibility, take calculated risks, and stimulate new ideas within the organization.
