Full-time Contract position for 3 months)

The Royal Ontario Museum seeks a skilled Conservator with training and experience in conservation of objects for a 3-month assignment with possible extension.

The Conservator will work under the direction of the Senior Conservators (Stone, Ceramics and Glass, and Organic, Ethnographic Objects) preparing objects in the permanent collections for exhibition (internal and touring).

The work will include surface cleaning, structural treatments and aesthetic reintegration, as required.


Under the direction of Senior Conservators, to complete conservation treatments of arts and cultural objects of primarily organic materials, with some treatments of inorganic and mixed materials.

To submit written conservation condition reports, conservation treatment proposals and conservation treatment reports, along with all supplemental documentation including digital photography and analytical testing using in-house equipment.

To assist intra- and inter-departmental initiatives directly relating to the conservation of objects, such as condition reporting, preventive conservation consultation and multi-disciplinary treatments.


Master’s degree in Conservation from a recognized training program with a minimum of two years’ relevant experience or acceptable equivalent in education and experience.

Competent knowledge of historic technology, techniques and materials used primarily in the conservation of organic objects (including leather, gilding and lacquer).

Competency in inorganic objects (metals and ceramics) is desired.

Ability to propose, carry out and document conservation of objects with dexterity, understanding and judgement.

Ability to digital photography. Knowledge of database computer programs.

Ability to work as part of a team and to communicate and deal with others in a tactful and cooperative manner.

STARTING SALARY : $62,432-$67,782

CONTRACT LENGTH : 3 Month Contract
