Professional : Early Childhood Education Diploma or a UniversityDegree in

Child Studies

Minimum 1 or more years’ experience inchildcare after graduation

Experience in integrated settings

Current First Aid and C.P.R. Certificates

ProgramResponsibilities

To ensure aprogram that will promote the physical, social, emotionaland

intellectual well being of thechildren by following up the planning that is done in the agegroups that you are assigned. As well as any other duties that arerequired and delegated by the Director.

Direct, Support, Observe and Evaluatestudent / staff learning by :

Modeling at routine and transition times

Communicating via the communication log in thebinders

Skill

This position involves a wide range of duties andresponsibilities that require planning in advance, on-goingattention to maintain safety and well-being of the children, aswell as refined communication and problem-solving skills.

The complexity and diversity of this positionis best illustrated by the following list of duties andresponsibilities all of which may occur simultaneously or withinany ten minute period.

Supervisinga children’s playroom, implementing a language activity witha

small group of children,redirecting a child’s inappropriate behavior, modeling

these techniques for student teachers,observing and evaluating the

student’s interactions with children, applying first aidtreatment and notifying

the parentsof the injury depending on its severity.

Judgment

Situations inthis position requiring decision-making are generally covered bystandardized guidelines, policies and procedures.

Decisions aremade, however, on special problems or issues on a regular basiswhen some judgment would be required.

Eg. The staff would be responsible for identifying astudent teacher in difficulty,

documenting and ascertaining areas of performance deficitbased on

outlined requirements,providing feedback to the student and developing

strategies (based on appropriate teachingtechniques) to enable the

studentto achieve success or reassess career goals. The staff wouldbe

responsible to inform the centersupervisor, and / or the College faculty

member of the situation and make recommendations forfurther action.

Staff isresponsible for determining the developmental level of each childin the program (based on knowledge of normal child development),and selecting and implementing the appropriate teaching strategiesand techniques to enhance growth.

In the case where development isdelayed, the staff would be responsible for initiating action tobegin the process of consultation with the family and otherprofessionals, and then adapt the program to incorporate theirrecommendations.

MotorSkills

There are aspects of theposition that require fine motor movement (delicate, intricate orprecise)

Report Writing - used for children’sdevelopmental records, student

teacher programplans, log books and evaluations. Legibility and some speed isrequired.

Assisting children in completing tasksof daily living (eating, toileting,

dressing andin using learning materials such as scissors, pencils,lego,

etc.).

Knowledgeble and comfortable with PC.

Physical Demand

This is aphysically demanding position as it requires constant activemovement from standing position to squatting or sitting on thefloor or child sized chairs, as it is necessary to be at thechild’s level and then move quickly to other areas of the classroomas needed.

Lifting and moving of furniture is also required toadapt the room set-up throughout the day. Physical strength is alsorequired as there may be children up to 50 pounds who requirelifting for diapering or other special needs.

Sensory Demand

Asignificant level of concentration and careful observation (visualand auditory) is required to maintain constant awareness of allareas of the environment to ensure the safety and well-being of thechildren.

This is often made more difficult by the high noise leveland variety of demands made on the staff while remainingever-vigil.

Strain from WorkPressures / Demands / Deadlines

Jobduties involve work pressures as a result of the constant demandsmade by the varied client groups (children, families and studentteachers).

The staff is regularly required to assess theever-changing needs of the clients and adapt the program asnecessary. Crisis and difficult situations occur daily (families inturmoil, children’s behavior issues and struggling studentteachers) which require staff skill, sensitivity anddiscretion.

Workload (to meetestablished deadlines) though predictable, requires prioritizingwithin a limited and mostly inflexible time frame.

Independent Action

Work is performed in accordance with established programroutines, schedules and plans developed co-operatively in bothformal and informal team meetings.

Instructions would be given bythe center supervisor on any changes to the established programsand routines.

Operating legislationand guidelines for Ontario Child Care facilities are outlined inthe Day Nurseries Act’, a technical government document.

Specificguidelines for dealing with particular situations are described inour own Policies and Procedures Manual.

The staff is responsible on a regular basis to ensureappropriate actions and teaching strategies are used to maintainthe safety and well-being of the children.

Creativity is requireddaily to implement a stimulating educational experience for bothchildren and student teachers. Occasional initiative would berequired in response to unusual or difficult situations whereimmediate action is required.

Asthe staff has direct responsibility for the well-being of childrenand influence on other internal and external clients, any neglectin carrying out the position duties could have repercussionsranging from severe injury or death of a child to loss of prestigeand / or fee revenue.

Written reportsare usually submitted to the supervisor for review and returned tothe staff with constructive comments. Errors in judgment, style ofprogram delivery and specific interactions with client groups wouldonly be detected if observed by others and reported or ifnoticeable repercussions as noted above resulted.

Staff is required to work outside during the outdoorplay period every day in all weather except extreme cold and rainstorms.

Staff will be exposed tochildhood illness and disease that are prevalent in childcarecenters.

Staff will be exposed tounpleasant odors relating to children’s toileting routine andcleaning up when children are sick.
