WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The Ocean Wise Finance Department has an exciting new opportunity for an experienced Business Planning Analyst. Our organization is diverse and dynamic, and as a result, we are seeking a candidate with strong analytic and financial modeling skills as well as the capacity to break complex problems into a set of understandable and manageable components.

The successful candidate must be detail-oriented and able to work well under pressure while managing competing deadlines.

We are looking for someone who is a graduate of the CPA program.

ROLE OVERVIEW

As a key member of the Finance Team, the Analyst, Business Planning & Analysis is responsible for providing senior financial support to the organization by producing annual operating budgets, reviewing and analyzing monthly financial statements, preparing monthly and quarterly forecasts, and reviewing / monitoring grant applications and reports.

They will take a leadership role in advising, and consulting on financial statements, budgets, contract reviews, and ad hoc / routine financial reports for key stakeholders.

The successful incumbent will also become the organizational expert on financial information systems and assist in the development and implementation when required.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Performs Financial Analysis by :

  • Performing monthly variance analyses between budgeted and actual results and reviews analyses with stakeholders;
  • Preparing summary reports for executives, management, other employees and stakeholders, including Board of Directors and Committee reports, project costs and ad hoc reports;
  • Assisting with the year-end audit by performing analysis and preparing journal entries;
  • Maintain and proactively improve financial models to enhance and streamline existing processes to compile, analyze and report on monthly financial results;
  • Constantly evaluating and continuously improving accounting business process and systems.
  • Preparation of Budget and Forecast by :

  • Coordinating and overseeing the annual budgeting process, including worksheet preparation, departmental budget reviews, and import file preparation;
  • Preparing monthly financial forecasts through consultation with department managers, directors and senior staff.
  • Administrating Grant Processes and Overseeing Contract Negotiations by :

  • Preparing project budgets and preparing interim and final grant reports for grantors;
  • Assisting in the management and monitoring of expenditures associated with contracts and grant awards;
  • Supporting management in risk management by reviewing contracts, waivers, and contest rules and preparation of insurance renewal documents.
  • Provides Technical Accounting and Other Support by :

  • In conjunction with department management, leading the development of business models and completing business plans for new or revised business activities;
  • Supporting software systems review including needs assessments, RFP preparation, proposal review and supports the implementation of selected software;
  • Advising on technical accounting procedures and assisting departments with financial statement analysis, internal controls and purchasing;
  • Providing assistance with the interpretation of tax receipting legislation;
  • Monitoring and controlling expenses, high level of detail.

  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience

  • A minimum of 5+ years of progressive experience in general accounting, financial statement analysis, budgeting, and forecasting is required;
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA) is required;
  • A combination of experience and education will be considered;
  • Experience in high-level contract analysis and interpretation is an asset;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, capacity to work constructively with a diverse group of people;
  • Capacity to work under tight deadlines and to manage effectively a diverse set of activities and priorities;
  • A practical approach to projects and problems;
  • Experience in change management with implementation of an accounting system;
  • Exhibits problem solving skills and sound judgement decision making;
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Technical Competencies

  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office programs; exceptional knowledge in Excel;
  • Well rounded knowledge of accounting cycle;
  • Aptitude for learning new software packages;
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities within tight deadlines;
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Ability to work with a high degree of discretion and tact in handling confidential matters;
  • Active demonstration of the company’s values and mission.
  • Working Conditions

  • The incumbent will work in a shared office environment with the usual ergonomic risks;
  • The position is primarily non-physical.
