This Business Consultant (BC) is a senior member of a team of IS Business Analysts within the Information Security (IS) Project Management Office.

The Business Consultant acts as requirements project lead for large IS projects and will also develop preliminary requirements, develop opportunity assessments and will facilitate requirements gathering across Information Security teams before project initiation to help clarify and formalize the project goals, objectives, and scope.

In addition to project work, the Business Consultant may consult with the business to help define the need for new and / or enhanced products, services, or optimized business processes.

Key Accountabilities

  • Participate in formulating the business analysis practices within Information Security : development of BA Handbook, tailored guidance for enterprise requirements documents etc.
  • Contribute to building the BA community and best practices.
  • Participate in BA intake process for Information Security assessing work effort and duration of business analysis deliverables.
  • Within the context of the project, leads discussions with Information Security teams to better understand the business environment, to determine potential impacts on the project scope and objectives, and to modify the requirements management plan, if required
  • Builds, sustains, and leverages relationships with individuals within his / her area of immediate responsibility when gathering, validating, and reviewing requirements to establish a comfort level in managing relationships and understanding business needs and assurance that a quality result will be delivered.
  • Ensures the requirements map to a real business need, are approved by all relevant stakeholders, and meets essential quality standards
  • Collaborate with Technology Business Consultants and Business Analysts to determine the best approach for eliciting, analyzing, validating, and prioritizing requirements to ensure that the necessary information is captured from the relevant stakeholders to address the business needs
  • Partners with Technology to facilitate and document the IS business requirements for a project : may participate in generating the High Level
  • Requirements Document ensuring that tailored Information Security requirements documentation practices are followed. Reviews Detailed
  • Requirements Specifications, and Requirements Change Requests.
  • Verifies requirements and insures the impact of any change to those requirements is understood by the stakeholders.
  • Provide support for Opportunity Assessments, RFI / RFPs or Proof of Concepts
  • Identify inconsistencies and gaps within a business process, collaborates with stakeholders to clarify complex processes
  • May document, coordinate, and / or implement UAT test strategy and plans, test cases, training strategy, training plans or supporting material
  • Provides coaching, professional guidance, and support to Business
  • Analysts (FTE and Contractors), as required, in order to foster professional development
  • Identifies opportunities to strengthen the capability at BMO, such as : sharing expertise to promote technical development, mentoring employees, building communities of practice and networks across technology.
  • Stays abreast of industry technical and business trends through participation in professional associations, practice communities & individual learning
  • Core Knowledge

  • Generally 7+ years of business analysis work experience in Information Security, IT or business environment supporting medium to large size projects, and / or B.
  • Sc. / B.A. in computer science, engineering, information systems, math or business

  • Excellent understanding of business analysis best practices
  • Possesses analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Possesses the ability to create / contribute to tactical and strategic vision.
  • Demonstrates applied knowledge of one or more analysis and problem decomposition techniques
  • Understands complete Software Development Life Cycle and can apply the applicable portions of the Feasibility,’ Requirements, and Analysis’ phases.
  • Demonstrates writing and documentation skills.
  • Possesses a deep understanding and problem solving ability of IT of various scale, degree and dimension of complexity and then manages the complexity across business value, technology, and interaction models.
  • Understands and can explain to others the core processes involved in their area of support
  • Understands and is familiar with the application of techniques associated with data modeling, process modeling, and user-
  • centred design within the context of the organizational standards

  • Ability to navigate a highly matrixed organization effectively
  • Experience with business process mapping including knowledge of standard tools and technique
  • Is proactive and is able to manage change and cope with complex and ambiguous situations
  • Sound business and technical acumen, with demonstrated agility in learning and ability to quickly become comfortable with unfamiliar businesses areas or of technologies
  • Solid business knowledge in the Finance / Banking / Investment industry
  • Experience in any of the following areas would be desirable : Cyber Security, Identity Access Management, Information Security, Data Loss Prevention, Technology Risk Management
  • Possess the ability to be proactive, tactful, diplomatic, and flexible, and the ability to network with and influence cross-
  • functionally at all levels of the organization.

  • Experience with JIRA, Confluence an asset
