JOB PURPOSE / SUMMARY :
The primary purpose of this position is to provide relief for dredge crew who take vacation, sick leave, or injury leave.
Must be willing and able to work a live-aboard schedule (week on / week off) with little notice. The secondary purpose of this position is to work as a welder / fabricator in the support facility for the dredge.
While on the dredge the Deckhand is responsible under the direction of the Captain to assist the Engineer, Leverman in the safe and efficient operation, maintenance and repair of the dredge and associated machinery and equipment.
The Deckhand has very limited accomplishment (training) in all aspects of dredge / tugboat operation, maintenance and repair.
While working in the shore-side facility, under the direction of the Foreman, duties may include welding, maintaining a clean work environment, rebuilding dredge components, maintaining mobile equipment, and providing labor support to other Foss departments.
The Deckhand is expected to exercise due diligence in the performance of duties in the interest of the crew, employer, customer and marine public at large.
This position reports to the Engineer / Leverman / Captain (Dredge Superintendent).
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
Tug engine room logs.
Dredge engine room logs.
Report Vessel inspections to CAPTAIN (RCP, Security, daily / watch, operational.
Submit / review Payroll time sheets with CAPTAIN.
Confirm communication of vacation requests, vacancies due to illness / injury or misconduct.
Participate in Safety meetings / drills / training.
Submit MSHA site inspection books to CAPTAIN.
Maintain a current understanding of Memorandums.
Tug / Dredge status, report findings to E / DL / CAPTAIN and Dredge Superintendent or a member of management acting in his stead.
Provide specific information or data requested by management promptly.
Seeks out and takes direction from E / DL / CAPTAIN / management.
Assist in safe, practical and efficient / economic operation, maintenance and repair of dredge.
Monitors MSHA compliance.
Performs / Reports corrective action to maintain MSHA compliance.
Report to E / DL / CAPTAIN regularly.
Assist in monitoring material quality (reports to DL).
Reports material quality and production issues to DL.
Perform / assist operation, maintenance and repair of tugboat under direction of E / DL / CAPTAIN.
Report / log / document unusual or unexpected occurrences - illness, injury, damage, or misconduct.
Update dispatch / management to significant delays, problems or departures from plan (when E / DL / CAPTAIN not present).
Monitor / report condition and performance of equipment.
Facilitate progressive training of crews- general skills, specific skills and safety.
Acquire and maintain an understanding of product specifications and quality.
Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
When required / requested, perform duties on the tug as directed by CAPTAIN.
Relieve crew for break / meal / head-call rotation.
Participate in the preparation of meals.
Participate in the immediate and continual cleaning of galley, head(s), passages and common areas.
Encourage a cohesive and congenial atmosphere for a crew living close quarters.
Implement / Adhere to company policies, practices and procedures.
Ensure the Dredge Superintendent or a member of the management team acting in his stead is kept informed of all significant matters relating to his assigned endeavor, vessel / unit and crew.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
Advanced skills in Fabrication, welding (especially arc / stick welding).
Knowledge of Elementary Hydraulics, basic electrical,basic mechanics, basic fluid flow (hydraulic dredging),basic rigging.
Aptitude for operating machinery / equipment.
Basic seamanship skills and knowledge splicing, rigging etc.
Organizational and communication skills for effective teamwork.
Ability to demonstrate good judgment for effective problem solving.
Administrative skills to maintain records and inventories.
Basic computer literacy.
Valid Merchant Mariner Document.
Valid Driver's License.
