Reporting to the Environmental Manager for Generation, the Environmental Scientist (Stack Tester) is responsible for the safe and efficient planning, scheduling and execution of the stack test program to monitor air emissions at Nova Scotia Power Incorporated’s (NSPI’s) Thermal Fleet.

As part of the Environmental Services team, the Environmental Specialist will liaise with internal departments, provide oversight of any external stack testing, and communicate with regulatory departments / agencies in providing this stack testing support across NSPI’s Thermal Fleet.

Accountabilities :

You will lead the fieldwork and office components of the NSPI stack test program.

Fieldwork responsibilities will include :

  • Implementation of safety plans and job hazard analysis prior to all work;
  • Sample collection at facility emissions points that will include tall stacks and exposure to environmental elements including heat, cold, humidity, snow, rain, wind, sun, and noise;
  • Training and supervision of other stack testing technicians;
  • Assisting with the site supervision and auditing of contractor services;
  • Data analysis and interpretation;
  • Coordination of fieldwork and equipment logistics; and
  • Driving a NSPI Fleet vehicle.
  • Office responsibilities may include :

  • Scheduling and coordination of the stack test program;
  • Equipment repair, calibration, and maintenance;
  • Inputting data into Excel spreadsheets;
  • Data analyses and preparation of reports for regulatory departments / agencies in support of the stack test programs;
  • Assess the condition and efficiency of pollution control equipment;
  • Prepare dispersion models and develop air-sampling methods;
  • Prepare reports and recommend changes based on test results; and
  • Correspond with the regulator on the air emissions requirements and compliance.
  • The position requires significant fieldwork and associated travel (up to 50%). May require some weekend work and extended travel.

    You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of co-workers, by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.

    You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.

    Skills, Capabilities and Experience :

    The ideal candidate will have :

  • Ability to perform the work in a safe manner by adhering to NSPI’s safety procedures and practices;
  • A Bachelor of Science degree (preferably in Chemistry) or a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Chemical or Environmental);
  • Experience and familiarity in the coal-fired utility industry;
  • Strong MS Word and Excel skills;
  • A high level of professionalism and strong work ethic;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • A minimum of three years of relevant stack testing experience;
  • Qualified Source Test Individual (QSTI) certification from the Source Evaluation Society (SES); and
  • Expertise in a broad range of Environment Canada methods including : EPS 1 / RM / 1, EPS 1 / RM / 2, EPS 1 / RM / 4, EPS 1 / RM / 6, EPS 1 / RM / 7, EPS 1 / RM / 8, Ontario Hydro Mercury, and 1 / PG / 7.
  • Additional method expertise using US EPA Methods 1-10, 13, 23, 26A, 29, 30, 201A, and 202.

    Candidates must be able to lift and carry a 50-pound load, climb ladders, and be comfortable working at heights. A valid driver's license and good driving record are required.
