The Trev and Joyce Deeley Research Centre (DRC) is an integral a part of BC Cancer Victoria. The DRC is a world class cancer research facility with specialization in cancer immunology.

As part of this focus on cancer immunology, the DRC houses the Molecular and Cellular Immunology Core (MCIC), which provides histological services for DRC member labs, external collaborators and industry clients from around the globe.

MCIC services include :

  • Tissue processing, embedding and sectioning
  • Construction of tissue microarrays
  • Multicolour immunohistochemistry (mcIHC) and multicolour immunofluorescence (mcIF)
  • Automated image acquisition and analysis
  • In addition to these services we will be developing molecular techniques such as in situ hybridization and in situ PCR techniques to add to our ever expanding capabilities.

    What you’ll do

    We are looking for a full time Research Assistant II to join our dynamic MCIC-Histology team. The successful applicant will work under the direction of the MCIC-Histology supervisor and be responsible for :

  • Performing histological services
  • Assisting in getting new imaging equipment up and running and integrated into workflow
  • Assisting in the development of new techniques such as in situ hybridization and in situ PCR
  • Analyzing multicolour immunohistochemical / immunofluorescent stains using automated scoring methods
  • Maintaining reagent inventories
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment
  • Other duties as required
  • What you bring

    The successful applicant will have a Bachelor of Science degree in a related discipline such as Biology or Biochemistry, and a minimum of two years of recent related experience in a research laboratory with at least one year of histology experience.

    Experiences with tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy and image analysis are key assets. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may also be considered.

    In addition to strong communication skills, the ideal applicant will demonstrate a record of responsible decision making, the ability to prioritize work, and the capability to independently plan and conduct experiments.
