We are looking for a Mechanical Group Leader / Manager who will work remotely, at present, for our Ottawa office. The Mechanical Group Leader / Manager will lead all mechanical design related activities for the Design Services team.

Manage a team of designers, mechanical engineers to achieve the project requirements with respect to cost, schedule, scope and quality.

Key Responsibilities

Establish and maintain effective interfaces with Production, Systems Engineering, CM / DM, Systems Integration Support and Design Services Installation, V&V and Technical Support team on site and in Ottawa for the direct and effective application of Mechanical Design and Engineering resources.

Establish and maintain effective interfaces and communication with Thales customers to understand and communicate business needs to the Mechanical Design Engineering team and ensuring the team is aware of and contributes to the success of our Customers.

Ensure that the Mechanical Design Engineering Team contributes directly to TCDS success through innovation, competitive thinking & behavior, and the efficient application of process.

Seeking opportunities to improve efficiency of the Mechanical Engineering Group workflows and tasks by exploring emerging technologies tools such as 3D Printing, RPA, AR / VR capabilities for remote collaboration with customer & suppliers.

Once the opportunities are defined, presenting benefit, cost, and value analysis to management along with execution plan to implement ideas.

Required Skills and Experience

1. MANAGEMENT SKILLS

  • Having a track record of demonstrating excellent planning, time / task management skills
  • Planning of group activities on one or multiple projects by using the appropriate management tools to define and schedule the tasks.

    Identifying, organizing and managing the resources (staff, services, and supplies) required to achieve goals.

    Lead Design Services Mechanical Systems Engineering activities, Work Packages across existing, new and proposed (bidding new business acquisition) projects, including support of the design to build transition for JSS and OOSV by establishing and defining processes, leading discussions, influencing and collaborating across all engineering disciplines.

    Lead, direct, coach, mentor or undertake the following activities by the Mechanical Design Engineering Team :

    Resource planning for the demand asked by programs and other departments for supporting the undertaken work.

    Based on resource requirements define the department’s needs for hiring including seeking for skills while hiring interns

    Ensuring that assigned work proceed according to the project schedule, within budget, and in accordance with all requirements.

    This includes revising plans and forecasts as required to accommodate changes in circumstances.

    Prepare skill development plan for mechanical engineers / technologists in the team based on department’s need for supplying the demand for programs, increasing the current skill set as well as new business acquisitions, as well as vision of the department which is aligned with engineering discipline growth plan including emerging technologies

    Contribute to bids, proposals and pre-Phase A studies with design concepts that are feasible and realistic. Developing cost and time estimates for new or proposed programs, including an assessment of foreseeable risks and opportunities.

    Coach, mentor and train junior and intermediate engineers as well as interns and co-ops.

    Facilitate stakeholder agreement about changes to and management of the Design Services requirements.

    Influence technical management areas including risk management approach, and risk mitigation strategies.

    Gain agreement on business / mission needs and the Concept of Operations.

    Facilitate decisions on baseline changes with customer. Influence customer mitigation strategy and system acceptance.

    Recommend supplier approach to customer and influence customer decisions based on chosen suppliers. Recommend supplier changes wherever appropriate.

    Initiate, develop and oversee continuous improvement projects to enhance design services capabilities and eliminate non-value added activities.

    Additional goals and overall vision :

    Explore opportunities for process automation in Design Services to reduce resource loading and minimize human error inherent in repetitive tasks.

    Seek out and implement wherever possible emerging technologies such as 3D printing and virtual design reviews and walkthroughs to better communicate design intent and reduce design cycles.

    Support and encourage cross discipline training of the mechanical team to provide agility and open up further opportunities to contribute to the overall success of any project undertaken.

    2. TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Develop BOM updates, ECR support, Design Reports, Product and Platform Updates and installation Packages and other design services interaction with all program stakeholders.
  • Control project CAD models, provide interface control between modules, subsystems and components, and perform compatibility and verification analyses.

    Control and maintain the project baseline for size / volume, mass, and inertia of all components and assemblies.

    Perform mechanical compatibility analysis, serve as the project point of contact, and interface to external support for stress, dynamics, thermal and other special engineering disciplines.

    Assist systems engineers with the decomposition and derivation of requirements as they relate to mechanical, environmental, installation and related systems and processes.

    Ensure that mechanical designs are practical, producible and efficient, and that human interface requirements are met.

    Analyze, define and trace system requirements and recommend performance measures, schedule and compliance of the supplied technical solution, produce and manage engineering bills of materials, oversee integration of procured systems in a multi-disciplinary environment.

    Support the definition and estimation of work packages.

    Assist in the verification and validation of electronic systems.

    Recommend mechanical design solutions that are innovative, scalable, and adaptive.

    Provide technical input to the RFP package, and analyse and evaluate RFP responses from suppliers.

    Establish and maintain a project design baseline and provide drawings and layouts.

    Develop currency in mechanical system best practices, methodologies, initiatives and advancements.

    Take the role of Mechanical Engineering Design Authority for all programs.

    Drive mechanical design activities in new and innovative ways to increase value and reduce rework while maintaining a high level of reliability and confidence from the rest of the Thales team and our customers
