Position Overview

A Distribution Operator (DO) is a member of the Control Centre Operating team, focused primarily on providing support for regular and emergency distribution work.

The DO’s primary responsibility is to monitor, control and support the work on FortisBC’s distribution system to ensure the safe and reliable supply of power to its customers.

The position requires shift work as per established shift schedules.

Distribution Operators report to a staff supervisor or delegate.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, control and operate the distribution system.
  • Serve as Operating Authority of the distribution system and ensure all work performed within their Operating Authority complies with applicable codes, and standards.
  • Coordinate duties in an expedient manner with the Control Centre Operating team to restore the distribution system when disturbances are experienced.
  • Respond to system trouble calls, advise and dispatch appropriate field standby personnel
  • Provide updated information related to distribution outages
  • Maintain a thorough familiarity with distribution system operating procedures, distribution field equipment and distribution contingency plans.
  • Assist in the training of other Distribution Operators.
  • Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a utility environment.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a control center.
  • Diploma in the Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
  • Acceptable electrical trade experience working with distribution system operations preferred.
  • Experience as Dispatch Coordinator will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and perform in a high stress environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal courteously with members of the public via telephone and work cooperatively with fellow employees.
  • Demonstrated proficient telephone, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficient computer skills and able to pass a related Company exam.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
