Position Description

This location recycles spent lead acid batteries.The recycling process creates occupational exposure to airborne lead dust & vapour which is managed with engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) through a site specific Lead Control Program.

The H & S Coordinator is an entry level position reporting to the H & S Manager.The H & S Coordinator will have a primary focus on on monitoring various safety inspection programs, in order to reduce employee exposure to lead.

This will be coupled with many aspects that support the companies H & S program, including monitoring employee exposure, field sampling for air & surface exposure, respirator fitting program & administration, daily monitoring of plant and hygiene facilities to ensure adherence to PPE practices, and worker education and training.

This opportunity would move to full time within 1 year, pending performance of the successful candidate.This would be followed by an expanded role in the Health & Safety Program at the Mississauga location.

Key Accountabilities

  • Monitor the provincial regulatory requirements associated with the sites Lead Control program.
  • Conduct daily plant inspections including worker hygiene facilities to observe worker use of PPE and lead exposure risks, reporting results to H&S Manager.
  • Conduct various safety inspections to ensure compliance with the companies H & S program.
  • Participate in respirator allocation and fitting program including administration.
  • Perform field sampling for air quality testing in the plant, including administration and analysis of results.
  • Oversee periodic air quality sampling conducted by independent 3rd party consultant.
  • Conduct D Lead swab tests randomly (at minimum monthly) on plant contact surfaces in offices / lunchroom / change rooms / washrooms, PPE, etc.
  • Assist with worker education and training as specified by H&S Manager.
  • Chart progress and statistics on employee lead reduction program.
  • Provide recommendations for improvement to the Employee Lead Control Program.
  • Other task as required.
  • Experience, Qualifications & Education

  • Diploma / Degree / Accreditation in Health & Safety, Environmental, Chemical, or other related field
  • 1-2 plus years’ experience an asset
  • This is a safety sensitive position. Offers of employment are conditional upon the successful completion of a drug and alcohol test (if applicable).
