Job summary

Reporting to the Director, Risk and Safety, the Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is responsible for providing and overseeing programs and services in support of safe work practices and regulatory compliance at UFV using a participatory and collaborative approach in identifying, reporting and addressing health and safety issues.

Your key responsibilities will include :

  • Engaging clients at all levels within the Institution to embrace and embed health and safety within its culture
  • Collaborating internally among and within departments to develop and employ key health and safety initiatives
  • Developing and maintaining a current universe of relevant and applicable regulations and resources
  • Maintaining oversight of health and safety compliance within the Institution to support research, teaching, learning and operations
  • Developing a consistent and practical safety culture through the development, training, maintenance and coordination of policies, procedures, programs, resources, communications, self-assessments and awareness
  • Providing and / or coordinating identified safety training and collaborative health and safety initiatives
  • Providing regulatory updates, guiding compliance, and facilitating regulatory reporting requirements
  • Reviewing and / or completing regulatory proposals, requirements, responses and filings
  • Managing relationships with regulatory agencies
  • Developing / implementing department specific risk assessment activities including providing support to identify, develop and implement appropriate interventions
  • Developing, maintaining and reporting on health and safety metrics
  • Responding to critical events related to employee incidents / injuries
  • Leading investigation of workplace injuries, accidents and near misses, preparing reports providing recommendations for prevention and ensuring implementation of correct actions
  • Maintaining incident records and performing appropriate follow-up
  • Conducting workplace safety inspections, either independently or in conjunction with the Joint Health & Safety Committees
  • Acting as the Occupational Health and Safety program lead for the Institution
  • Participating as a member of the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee and other Committees as required; providing support, guidance and technical knowledge to effectively assist in carrying out the Committee’s responsibilities
  • Acting as the certified Biosafety Officer for the Institution to lead the overall governance of the program in conjunction with relevant stakeholders
  • Responding to emergencies outside of regular working hours as need dictates
  • Performing other duties as required
  • Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a recognized program in Health & Safety or equivalent program
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in a relevant Health & Safety position.
  • Detailed knowledge of relevant Health & Safety legislation and regulations in British Columbia
  • Certification in laboratory and radiation safety preferred
  • Knowledge of the range of health and safety disciplines to manage delivery of services to a diverse client group
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to interact and communicate with others at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent decision making, problem solving and time management skills with the ability to establish and implement priorities
  • Excellent attention to detail and observation skills
  • Knowledge and application of Post-Secondary Health & Safety systems would be a strong asset
  • Ability to build and lead teams to establish, influence and maintain health and safety systems
  • Proficient in the use of MS Office Suite, including spreadsheet, database management, word processing and presentation applications
  • Familiarity with Banner considered an asset
  • Local travel is required in this position; must hold a valid BC driver’s license and have a vehicle
