Compensation : Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.
Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $20.41 per hour.
Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $32.13 per hour.
In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant?s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.
Duties : The nominal workload for this position is 5 hours per week (3 hours demonstrating, 2 hours marking). Duties and responsibilities will be in accordance with Article 22 of the Collective Agreement.
Under the direction of the course instructor, the incumbent is required to be familiar with laboratory procedures, prepare and present an introduction to the lab, demonstrate biotechnology and chemistry laboratory techniques, teach and assist students during the lab, maintain safe laboratory conditions, be responsible for lab preparation and cleanup, keep attendance and marks records, mark lab reports, and attend meetings as needed.
May be required to prepare stock solutions and live cultures and perform other tasks as directed by the course instructor.
Participation in TA Orientation Day is recommended. Qualifications : As a minimum, the incumbent must be at the fourth year level of an honors program in biotechnology, completed BTEC 3P09 or an equivalent course, have an average of at least 75%, and have worked for at least 3 months in a chemistry research laboratory.
Familiarity with culturing of yeast and bacteria under sterile conditions, autoclaving, etc. is essential. Attendance at the Divisional Science Safety Seminar is a departmental requirement.
