Primary Focus

This role carries out tasks within the income tax reporting function for assigned entities within the Calgary Tax Services Department.

It includes compliance, budget & forecasting for taxes, financial reporting for taxes, tax authority audit support and research.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for carrying out the income tax compliance function for assigned entities within the Calgary Tax Services Department.
  • The income tax compliance function includes research as well as meeting compliance requirements on a timely and accurate basis.

    This includes the preparation of federal and provincial income tax returns including, but not limited to, partnership returns, trust returns, foreign affiliate and other non-

    resident forms. It also includes maintaining current calculations of adjusted cost base and surplus accounts.

  • Responsible for carrying out the financial reporting for taxes function for assigned entities within the Calgary Tax Services Department.
  • This includes tax accounting research, computation of taxes and drafting of tax disclosures on a quarterly and annual basis.

    It also lends support to the consolidation team within the tax services department.

  • Responsible for carrying out budget and forecasting of taxes for assigned entities within the Calgary Tax Services Department.
  • Supports the Tax Authority Audit function for assigned entities within the Calgary Tax Serviced Department. This includes drafting replies to audit queries and proposed reassessments as well as staying abreast of changes in CRA administrative positions and audit practices.
  • Provides Ad hoc income tax advice within the Calgary Tax Services Department as well as to other internal stakeholders such as the Controllers, Treasury, Business Development and Legal.
  • Carries out income tax research as assigned and prepares written memorandums to document and support conclusions.
  • Responsible for monitoring changes in tax legislation, jurisprudences, assessing policies and changes in tax accounting standards and communicate such changes on a timely basis.
  • Prepares monthly presentation of such changes for discussion at monthly Tax Department meeting.

  • Mentor and coach junior members within the Income Tax Reporting group, including review of their work
  • Participates and prepares internally developed training programs and makes a commitment to continuous development of income tax and tax accounting skills.
  • Contributes to the positive team environment of the Calgary Tax Services Department.
  • Develops and maintains a strong understanding of the business.
  • Qualifications

  • University graduate of Business Administration or other related discipline
  • Accounting designation (CPA CA, CPA CGA, or CPA CMA)
  • Seven or more years of directly related experience with at least 5 years of experience in income tax (with focus on tax returns and income tax provisions)
  • Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills
  • Proficiency with Corporate Taxprep
  • Proficiency with accounting software (Oracle, HFM / Smartview)
  • Proficiency with tax provision software (OTP)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
