Requisition ID : 79458Join the Global Community of Scotiabankers to help customers become better off.Contributes to the overall success of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are execute / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.

Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. Under the direction of the SIU Manager and SIU Senior Manager, the Senior SIU Investigator conducts investigations on high risk and high complex cases for potential suspicious activity.

These are received from multiple sources, including but not limited to the Bank’s Automated Monitoring systems (AMS), Unusual Transactions Reports (UTRs) and Referrals initiated from various business units, negative news, Law Enforcement etc.

Consistently delivers clearly reasoned, rationale, and timely outcomes, findings and actions associated with SIU investigations, thereby mitigating potential financial, regulatory, reputational, and legal risk to BNS.

Key AccountabilitiesChampions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

Work collaboratively with line management, Enhanced Due Diligence Units and corporate stakeholder groups to implement appropriate due diligence and customer remediation steps to minimize related reputational risk to the Scotiabank.

Independently investigate and disposition high risk and high complex cases for potential suspicious activity and refer urgent or higher risk cases to the Senior Manager as required.

As assigned, the incumbent may be required to investigate cases / alerts with content relating to Retail, Corporate, Commercial or Small Business clients.

In these investigations, the Senior SIU Investigator will apply advanced research skills and expert knowledge of the Bank’s products / services and standard business practices to investigate and assess potential AML and operational risk exposuresAdvanced analytical skills and the ability to review and organize large amounts of data and / or information.

Utilizing strong open source research and investigative skills.Prepare and submit Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) to FINTRAC.

Ensure STRs are complete and accurate and submitted within procedural and regulatory deadlines.Maintain case records and related documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements and departmental standards.

In accordance with assigned role, the Senior SIU Investigator may be required to train and / or mentor other FIU Analysts and may be required to undertake complex cases from other FIU teams.

May be required to review client exit recommendations for reasonability, accuracy and completeness and further escalate to Senior Management for approval.

May provide case specific AML guidance to business units including specific direction on appropriate escalation procedures and enhanced due diligence to mitigate potential money laundering and terrorist financing risk.

Develop and maintain a sound knowledge and understanding of the Bank’s AML policies and procedures.Respond to requests and concerns from various business units and other risk functions across the Scotiabank Group in a timely manner.

Continuously identify opportunities for process and system improvements, and participate in the implementation process.Understand how the Bank’s Risk Appetite Statement (RAS) and risk culture should be considered and applied in day-to-day activities and decisions.

Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his / her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, effectiveness and adherence of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML / ATF risk including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML / ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

  • Experience / Education : Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in AML, Compliance and / or Audit capacity in a financial institution;
  • or its equivalent in education and years of experience.Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist or Certified Financial Crime Specialist designation is an assetAdvanced knowledge of Canadian and International regulatory statues and other reporting requirementsAdvanced knowledge of AML and KYC proceduresStrong analytical, problem-solving and critical thinking skillsExpected to work independently with limited supervisionMaintains industry knowledge and awareness of regulatory changes and trendsProven organization and time management skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skillsProven leadership skills and ability to influence othersPractical knowledge of branch operations and structureThorough understanding of complex corporate structures, sanctions and Politically Exposed Persons (PEP)Proficiency in Microsoft applications (including Word, Excel and Power Point) and expertise performing open source inquiries via the InternetSelf-reliant and pro-active approach to workExemplary integrity and ethics in all instances.

    Receives direction from the SIU Senior Manager and other Senior Management as appropriate on significant legal, regulatory and reputational risk and policy matters.

    Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours may be required to accommodate high priorities.High demand and fast-paced environment due to the frequency of urgent requests, time-sensitive work, competing priorities, and unexpected risk related operational situations.
