The Curatorial Assistant is responsible to carry out the care and management of artefacts in the City's Heritage Collection.

It has oversight of the artefacts from the collection housed at the Artifact Centre as well as those exhibited within the City's museums, which includes Fort Edmonton Park and the John Walter Museum, and exhibit spaces at the Prince of Wales Armouries Heritage Centre and Muttart Conservatory, and other facilities.

You will be responsible to :

  • Assist with the acquisition of artefacts following collection policy and procedures
  • Register and catalogue artefacts, assign accession numbers, photograph and complete condition reports. Maintain accession files over time, updating as necessary
  • Ensure storage environment meets museum standards; monitor environmental controls, and conduct inspections for pests, etc.
  • Carry out conservation treatments for preservation and restoration of items
  • Prepare business cases for any deaccession requests to the Deaccession Committee and document the results
  • Assist with the deaccession process following museum standards
  • Assist with research, artefact selection, and exhibit design. Maintain exhibits and replace seasonally
  • Create mounts, boxes, enclosures, etc. as required, to stabilize and protect artefacts in storage
  • Restore artefacts in a variety of materials, including repairing, cleaning, or creating / commissioning replicas
  • Assist with staff and volunteer training in the care and handling of artefacts
  • Answer public inquiries regarding the Artifact Centre and material culture in Edmonton
  • Qualifications

  • University Degree in History or Museum Studies
  • A minimum of 1 year experience working in a museum setting
  • Excellent communication, organizational and time management skills are required
  • Skilled in dealing courteously and tactfully with the public
  • Knowledge of collections management policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of museum management and inventory systems - specifically Past Perfect, Excel
  • Familiarity with museums cultural community engagement practices
  • Familiarity with Edmonton’s history / context
  • Coursework in Conservation of material culture is an asset
  • Museum education or interpretation experience an asset
  • Skills and coursework in woodworking and the use of carpentry is an asset; experience operating mechanical hand and power tools is an asset
  • Ability to design, sketch, and prepare display layouts
  • Ability to handle heavy items and equipment to assist with their movement
  • Possession of current standard First Aid is required prior to employment
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver’s permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
