JOB SUMMARY

The role of Expert Operational Performance is to perform the operational performance assessment of CN’s Operational Technology portfolio with a global objective of increasing our network capacity, efficiency and performance.

This includes using various performance assessment tools and methods such as modelling, simulation, statistical analysis and advanced analytical methods in order to convert reported metrics and data measures into actionable cost reduction and efficiency improvements plans.

This position requires close cooperation with different groups within CN such as Network Operation, Finance and the Operational Technology groups designing and deploying technology driven solutions.

Another key responsibility is to work in close partnership with different lines of business in order to produce in-depth analysis and benchmarking assessments to stimulate operational improvements on a local or global scale.

The Expert Operational Performance is actively participating in the operational performance reporting cycles of all Operation Technology solutions as well as using operations research methods and tools in order to optimize network efficiency and decision making in technology related deployments at CN.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Network Efficiency & Performance Optimization

  • Conduct detailed analysis of the current CN Operational Technology landscape and equipment ecosystem in order to establish performance baseline
  • Work with the Operational Technology teams and different CN business stakeholders to identify optimization technologies and processes with the potential to improve the efficiency, reliability and safety of freight transportation by rail and by truck
  • Work with R&D & Innovation teams to continuously assess future technologies and make recommendations for strategic development initiatives that would improve operational performance
  • Work with suppliers and researchers in applying advanced operations research techniques and methods to optimize freight transportation operations
  • Participate in identifying, framing and applying optimization methods and models to drive decision making, operation processes and system definition in order to support our business operations
  • Actively perform the collection and analysis of business operation data in order to identify potential optimization areas or improvement opportunities related to Operation Technology solutions
  • Develop mathematical models and methods to analyze and optimize solutions within the portfolio and maximize network capacity and performance
  • Perform test, prototype, proof-of-concept and pilot campaigns to confirm the accuracy of models and assessment methods
  • Document performance optimization assessments and define clear and actionable recommendations
  • Attend industry committees and academic research forums actively working on the technologies for the future of railways and freight transportation
  • Prepare presentation material to explain operations research technologies and concepts to key CN stakeholders and at industry events
  • Operational Performance Assessment

  • Participate in the analysis of the overall Operation Technology solutions and associated business requirements to define operational performance assessment methods and deliverables
  • Actively drive and execute the operational performance reporting cycles of the Operation Technology solution portfolio
  • Participate in the creation of standards and best practices that ensure the operational performance assessment reports are produced and properly documented
  • Perform and produce business analysis in close collaboration with CN’s finance team
  • Produce performance assessment reports and the associated material to support executive presentations
  • Be a champion to the Operation Technology teams on adoption of proper operational performance development and data driven designs
  • Work with engineering and operation teams to drive best practices and a practice based approach towards performance assessment
  • Act as the internal representative for operational performance related matters of all Operation Technology solutions
  • REQUIREMENTS

    Education / Certification / Designation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Research, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or related field
  • Skills / Knowledge

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation and facilitation skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Excellent ability to analyze, structure, document & present data and related insights
  • Knowledge of data visualization and analytics tools for business intelligence (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, etc.)
  • Knowledge of operations research tools, theories, models and techniques (probability theory, Monte Carlo methods, stochastic processes, models and programming, etc.)
  • Knowledge of methods and tools related to statistical analysis, simulations, predictive modeling, linear programming, game theory and related algorithms
  • Knowledge of optimization solvers and their environment (e.g. CPLEX, GuRoBi, XPRESS, etc.)
  • Computer literacy and knowledge of software programming, database and statistical solutions
  • Experience

  • Proven track record of success in operational performance for complex system technical environments
  • Minimum 5-10 years overall relevant work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of related industry experience (e.g. supply chain, logistics, transport, etc.)
  • Assets

  • Graduate degree in Operations Research, Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or related field
  • Knowledge of railway freight environments in North America
  • Experience in working with Agile and Dev(Sec)Ops development organizations
  • Managing Life cycle of delivery of complex system
  • Experience with executive presentations
