Role Description

The Head of Actuarial will lead the CL Re (Toronto) Actuarial team to meet Canadian statutory requirements. The role holder is required to :

  • Support division management including Head of US Life Reinsurance and Head of Traditional Life Business Development and Reinsurance Division Chief Actuary to deliver on their objectives;
  • Lead, develop and motivate a team of 15+ actuarial professionals;
  • Drive the actuarial agenda within the CL Re (Toronto) management team;
  • Ensure the actuarial initiatives that drive the agendas of the Reinsurance Division leadership team are both developed and delivered;
  • Provide advice, proposals and recommendations to the Reinsurance Division leadership team on actuarial topics including transaction performance, actuarial bases, ALM, capital management, internal reinsurance arrangements, risk management, new business propositions and potential business strategies;
  • Deliver actuarial reporting for a material, high profile block
  • Accountabilities :

  • Review and produce the Reinsurance Division contribution for actuarial liability and capital related disclosures for financial statements and MD&As, including items such as sensitivity tests, exposure reports and assumption change descriptions
  • Provide oversight to the production of the Sources of Earnings according to the guidelines established by the Chief Actuary
  • Valuation of Insurance & Investment Contract Liabilities
  • Regular review of assumptions and methods used to value actuarial and other policy liabilities
  • Recommend basis and method changes for approval by Appointed Actuary
  • Continue to adapt the process and technology to support complex valuation modeling requirements
  • Provide feedback on assumption setting and risk analysis performed as part of the new business underwriting process
  • Determine which emerging issues (internal and external) are relevant to the team’s current and future actuarial needs, including provision of actuarial analysis / management reports in a manner that can be easily understood
  • Support the CFO Reinsurance in the development of the Canadian IFRS earnings plan, including establishing key assumptions to be used
  • Promote a strong culture of professionalism, integrity and effective actuarial risk management
  • Qualifications and Competencies :

  • FSA, FCIA with 10+ years experience in a senior Actuarial role
  • Strong ability to apply creative thinking to manage decision making and make recommendations within the applicable Guidelines and Regulations
  • Leverage strong subject matter expertise to develop creative solutions
  • Continue to adapt the process and technology to support complex valuation modeling requirements
  • Proven ability to motivate and guide a team
  • Ability to distill various concepts into a coherent story
