Overview

The Estimator, Intermediate within the Vancouver Asphalt, Pave and Construction division has direct accountability for the preparing, submitting and tracking of estimates for the commercial, industrial, municipal and federal segments.

The Estimator, Intermediate plays a key role in securing work and projects for the Asphalt, Pave and Construction division in the Greater Vancouver Area.

Directly contributes to a One Lafarge vision by incorporating and utilizing all of Lafarge’s materials into bids.

This is a 15 month, maternity leave contract opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres and follows Lafarge’s safety and environmental policies. Including but not limited to hazards identification, assessment and control, fundamental standards, H&S policies and rules, and Lafarge See Something / Do Something.
  • Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates based on efficient construction practices, and using the most competitive and reliable subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Prepare final bid, complete with mark up based on market conditions, Lafarge policy and in conjunction with the Estimating Manager and / or General Manager.
  • Responsible for contract administration including proposals, tendering process, contracts, drawings and bonding. Understanding of claims / legal processes and deliverables.
  • Project management with larger ICI, small subdivisions, and small general contracting work.
  • Responsible for technical estimating including quantity take offs and estimating systems; introduction to vendor and subcontract management systems,, internal material processes, indirect, overhead and product distribution methods.
  • Use of templates, tags, as well as coding and estimate transfer.

  • Meeting anticipated bid closing dates.
  • Manage subcontractors, outline expectations, scheduling information and track productions.
  • Monitor project costs and financial reports. Provide feedback to operations and estimating departments.
  • Verify contract documents and blueprints for accuracy and project materials.
  • Complete takeoffs as necessary to provide realistic and precise quotes.
  • Follow up with submitted bids to track the market and to identify strategic improvements.
  • Job set-up for all projects estimated and awarded to Lafarge, including credit approval, schedules, pre-construction meetings, subcontract agreements, purchase orders, as well as internal job setup for operations and accounting.
  • Direct liaison with customers, consultants and owners. Ensure that client satisfaction has been achieved.
  • Collaborate with Superintendents when preparing bids.
  • Assist in the development of Co-op Students and Junior Estimators.
  • Prepare contract change order pricing and ensure project costs have been accounted for and invoiced accordingly.
  • Assist Accounts Receivable in following up with outstanding payments.
  • Attend pre-tender site meetings / visits to determine if any additional site issues can impact productions.
  • Education :

  • Diploma or Degree in Business or Engineering.
  • Experience and Skill Set :

  • Minimum of 3-5 years estimating experience.
  • Must have recent field experience with gravel, concrete and asphalt understanding yields, productivities, scheduling and quality control.
  • Must have understanding of pre-construction phasing, survey, grades, string line, equipment capabilities and machine control.

  • Understanding of estimating software, specifically Bid2Win.
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills

  • Good knowledge of Paving, Asphalt and Construction industry
