About the role
We’re looking for Commercial Lines Underwriters Level I or II to join our team in London, Ontario!
As an Underwriter in our Commercial Lines Classic Department, you are responsible for underwriting insurance risks and making decisions everyday that contribute to a profitable portfolio of business.
You will be customer-focused in everything you do, educating the broker and looking for ways to improve the customer experience.
With a strong sales ability, you will develop profitable business relationships with brokers and will be effective in upsell and cross sell activities.
What you’ll do here :
Assess, evaluate and negotiate on general to moderate risks.
Apply effective pricing and underwriting strategies in accordance with Company guidelines and personal underwriting authority limits.
Within your level of authority, quote, negotiate, sell, and authorize the acceptance of general to moderate new business, renewals, and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business according to the business plan established for the department.
Participate in broker visits, insurance industry functions and marketing events in support of broker relationship development
Work closely to develop and maintain positive business partnerships with brokers, reinsurers and co-workers.
Answer inquiries, develop and monitor business with brokers through visits, discussions, and correspondence.
Use the computer system for policy inquiry, electronic filing, underwriting and rating transactions.
Foster cooperative broker relationships to identify and develop sales opportunities.
Consult intermediate and senior underwriters for reinsurance and complex policies.
Minimal travel is required
What you bring to the table :
University Degree preferred or equivalent relevant work experience
Completion of or progress toward a CIP designation preferred.
1 to 5 years of Commercial Lines Underwriting experience
Must exhibit a sound knowledge of property and casualty commercial lines insurance required for the role.
Maintain a good and current understanding of all relevant Commercial Underwriting Guides and instructions related thereto.
Demonstrate the ability to handle moderate risks from policies.
Awareness of local community conditions and insurance issues.
Strong negotiating skills and business savvy
Initiative and ability to work under pressure
Great communication skills
Sound knowledge of Microsoft office products and computer tools.
Note : The level of role offered will be determined based on skills, experience and education.
