The University of Toronto and the Hospital for Sick Children produce research of exceptional, world-class quality in the area of child development.

The Policy Bench provides an opportunity for government and other stakeholders to access this diverse, interdisciplinary expertise through a simple, responsive mechanism.

This will ensure policies with direct or indirect effects on child development are based on the latest evidence across a multitude of disciplines health, psychology, social work, education, economics and medical sciences.

  • The Policy Bench will synthesize large and diverse bodies of literature on early child development, customized for specific policy requests from governments, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders;
  • translated and disseminated in ways that make the evidence accessible and applicable to each query. The service can be nimble and quick or offer in-depth approaches for more comprehensive results, depending on the specific query.

    As Research Associate, Limited Term Policy Bench the incumbent will be responsible for :

  • Liaising with Policy bench leads and faculty
  • Providing scholarly support and supervision
  • Having oversight of policy briefs and tools.
  • Facilitating contact with governments, NGOs and other stakeholders to prioritize and organize research responses
  • Supervising Doctoral fellows
  • Connecting faculty with specific expertise in related fields to the policy request
  • Developing a searchable database that will become a publicly available knowledge mobilization
  • Supporting the Centre for Brain and Mental Health annual conference at SickKids
  • Specific Duties and Responsibilities

    Coordinates and oversees all activities and works under the supervision of Barbara Fallon (U of T) and the Policy Bench Leadership Team.

    The Research Associate- Limited Term will engage in all aspects of research synthesis, project management and oversight of the production of policy briefs and tools.

    Scholarly participation :

  • Providing scholarly support and supervision
  • Project management and administration :

  • Planning and monitoring the implementation and completion of project activities
  • Overseeing the day-to-day work of the project
  • Monitoring and periodically reporting on the various project budgets
  • Communications :

  • All internal and external communications activities
  • Liaising with the academic and government partners
  • Administrating a small grants program which supports interdisciplinary collaborations that contribute to the policy or practice human development knowledge base;
  • planning and organizing team meetings, teleconferences, webinars, and other project meetings and events

    Knowledge translation :

  • Planning, implementing, and evaluating knowledge translation activities and preparing infographics, reports and other products for public circulation

  • PhD in social policy or field related to human development or medical degree.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments in building government-university alliances and managing teams.
  • Significant research skills, with particular experience in data collection, management, analysis and report production.
  • Effective networking skills and capacity to build relationships and collaborate with partners at multiple levels.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Outstanding verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and effectively prioritize each.
  • Must be highly motivated with an ability to work well autonomously and to collaborate and participate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience supervising staff, students and volunteers.
