Job Summary

To review, analyze and resolve complex and litigated claims specific to the Specialties / Financial Lines of business (including D&O, E&O, Financial Institutions, Cyber, Employment Practices liability, Fiduciary Liability, Surety, Environmental, Travel, Accident & Health) , of moderate to high exposure, to ensure that claims are handled in the most efficient, effective way while delivering a customer-centric claims service.

Job Accountabilities

  • Review claim documents to assess coverages of moderate to high exposure, such claim documents to include but are not limited to complaints, answers, motions to dismiss, and motions for class certification as well as other legal documents
  • Draft / analyze appropriate coverage position correspondence addressing liability and damages and address coverage with insured, broker, Business Unit, Insurance Tower, mediators and judges as necessary
  • Ensure claim and file management complies with Zurich best practices as well as provincial and federal insurance regulatory frameworks
  • Perform legal research to assess exposure on both liability, damages as well as coverage in the relevant jurisdictions
  • Directly negotiate complex, disputed cases with multiple parties
  • Review contracts, technical documents, etc. to properly assess legal situation and parameters so that successful, legally compliant solutions can be reached
  • Prepare and develop strategy for resolution of complex insurance matters, and ensure that matters are timely and appropriately reserved
  • Attend and participate in multi-party mediations / arbitrations to effectuate case resolution
  • Manage external lawyers and vendors as required
  • Business Travel, as required
  • Maintain Applicable Exam / Licensing, as required
  • Job Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience in managing Specialties / Financial Lines claims or similar experience in insurance defence and / or coverage practice or commercial litigation
  • Experience in insurance claims and the insurance legal and regulatory environment
  • Actual litigation or litigation management experience
  • Negotiation experience
  • Customer service experience
  • Microsoft Office experience
  • Preferred

  • JD strongly preferred
  • Member of the bar
  • Detail oriented
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills
