The Tax Manager is a key member of the Finance team and is primarily responsible for ensuring all financial statements, and related reports accurately reflect all tax matters within the organization.

The Tax Manager must be a subject matter expert in Canadian taxation, especially with respect to corporate income taxes, tax compliance, provision work and financial reporting standards in income tax area.

The candidate must meet the existing high standards of the Tax Department. Moreover, the company’s tax provisioning process is complex, so the candidate must be very familiar with different provisioning methods and be able to quickly learn the company’s accounting and MI systems and procedures.

Due to the complex legal entity structure and transactional activity, the role requires excellent accounting skills, such as in-depth understanding of multi GAAP environment, consolidation / de-consolidation, purchase accounting, etc.

The role requires substantial knowledge of Excel. The role requirements include certain project management skills, and ability effectively interact with the business units of Aviva.

The role encompasses management of the relationships with different government agencies, monitoring of the tax audits and timely information flow to the above.

A broad range of tax experience in terms of planning and dispute resolution is desirable, together with strong skill set in tax accounting and compliance principles, methods, and processes.

All members of the tax team must stay abreast of legislative and administrative policy changes in the tax area to ensure that the organization is able to minimize any tax impact (or seize any opportunities) presented by any governmental changes.

The Tax Manager is a very strong team player, with excellent analytical, written and oral communication skills.

Accountabilities

Tax Accounting and Compliance

  • Engage Finance Operations, Regulatory Reporting, and the business units in order to analyze and compute company tax provisions for purposes of Regulatory, accounting, and financial reporting of the Aviva Group of companies.
  • Apply all external and internal tax accounting and reporting principles and policies and to the reporting of taxes, taking into account business activities being carried on currently and that may be carried on in the future.
  • Provide guidance on any proposed changes to the accounting and reporting standards or environment and recommend modifications to any existing procedure or process to accommodate the possible changes.
  • Follow tax provision templates and processes for a number of group companies taking into account the types of businesses carried on, the information system data, and mandated timelines for financial and management reporting.
  • Produce accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual consolidated and legal entity tax provisions in respect of complex insurance and non-insurance companies.
  • Review and prepare Canadian corporate income tax returns and all necessary information forms for a number of companies, including exemplary supporting working papers or other documents that are consistent with all external and internal reports.
  • Determine tax installment methodology and provide advice on cash management strategy for tax payments.
  • Extensively use tax preparation software and follow internal tax policies with respect to the preparation, compilation and review of all materials submitted to government authorities with respect to all taxes of the Canadian Group.
  • Government and Audit Relationship Management

  • Represent the company in dealing with Federal and Provincial government auditors, and manage the relationships with government representatives, and financial auditors in respect of all tax matters.
  • Respond to any auditor enquiries while protecting the interests of the company, and limit amount of controversy arising from any financial reporting, tax filings, or payments.
  • Consider lines of defense and prepare notices of objection or appeal, including all the preparation of all supporting documentation and legislation necessary to address issues raised by the auditors.
  • Business Transactions

  • Actively participate in any tax planning, finance arrangements, merger and acquisition initiatives with regard to the Aviva Group of Companies.
  • Should be able to recognize issues, risks and tax opportunities imbedded in proposed planning initiatives.

  • Advise internal parties on the potential tax implications arising from various transaction structures, and prepare documents or memoranda that succinctly set-out the business rationale and tax impacts of different structural alternatives.
  • Ensure efforts are coordinated amongst internal partners, external parties, and advisors in executing any approved initiatives.
  • Responsible for implementation of the approved planning in a timely and practical manner, including addressing accounting impacts, and tax compliance requirements.

    Training and Development

  • Formulate practical tax accounting and compliance training schedule for more junior staff, with hands-on demonstrations of tax provisioning mechanics, the completion of corporate income tax returns, and the preparation of excellent supporting working papers.
  • Mentor junior staff in the identification, assessment, and management of operational, and reputational tax risks, in accordance with Aviva standards.
  • Help staff develop legislative interpretation skills covering a broad range of Federal and Provincial tax laws.
  • Special ad-hoc Projects

  • Help VP and AVP Taxation in special projects of Finance innovation, capital management, cash flow and others
  • Requirements

  • 7+ years of accounting and income tax experience
  • 3 years of specialized corporate tax experience in a company and / or an accounting or other professional services firm in a management position.
  • Expert in financial accounting / reporting of all tax matters.
  • Strong accounting skills in consolidations, multi GAAP accounting, purchase accounting
  • Strong technical skills in tax reporting and compliance.
  • Strong tax research skills
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experienced with researching and interpreting tax legislation and government administrative policies
  • High degree of proficiency in TaxPrep and other tax preparation software
  • Advanced Excel skills are preferred
  • This position is ideal for someone with solid reporting and tax accounting experience, a strong interest in income taxation and strong interpersonal skill are required.
  • Must be comfortable in changing accounting environment and open to learn the business and its requirements. Strong knowledge of Canadian GAAP (Canadian IFRS) is required.

    Experience or an interest in the development of the team members is also highly valuable to this position.

    Education

  • Professional accounting designation or enrolment in program : CA, CGA, or CMA.
  • University degree in accounting, finance or related field.
  • Completion of CICA In-Depth Tax Course, Part I and II.
