Permanent, Temporary, Casual Assignments

Thank you for your interest in an Educational Assistant position with the York Region District School Board. This application for Educational Assistants encompasses four positions :

  • Developmental Support Worker - Casual rate : $19.23, Temp / Perm Rate : $25.66 - $26.91
  • Child and Youth Care Worker - Casual rate : $19.23, Temp / Perm Rate : $26.69 - $27.95
  • Special Education Assistant- Casual rate : $19.23, Temp / Perm Rate : $23.52 - $24.78
  • Health Assistant - Casual rate : $19.23 , Temp / Perm Rate : $28.39 - $29.62

    These positions could include; Swim Assistant, Sign Interpreter, Communicative Disorders Assistant, etc.

    We require staff with a desire to provide quality service and programs to York Region students. To support our exceptional students and their ever-

    changing personal and educational needs, the Board is seeking Educational Assistants experienced in working with a wide variety of exceptionalities.

    We require employees who are flexible, willing to take on a multitude of challenges and who are prepared to attend to the physical needs of our students, which include toileting, lifting, feeding and physical intervention .

    Child and Youth Care Workers, Developmental Support Worker, Health Assistants and Special Education Assistants all support students with exceptionalities such as physical disabilities, developmental delays, autism, behaviour disorders, acquired brain injuries, hearing and vision loss.

    These services can be provided in a wide variety of educational settings such as standard classrooms, specialized facilities and work placements.

    In addition, in order to meet the needs of our students, staff assignments may be divided between more than one location.

    Therefore, employees are required to have access to regular transportation in order to travel between sites. The Board also reserves the right to transfer support staff between locations depending upon student and system needs.

    The term Educational Assistant encompasses a variety of positions. The largest portion of our Educational Assistant employee group is comprised of Developmental Support Workers, Child and Youth Care Workers, Health Assistants and Special Education Assistants.

    Developmental Support Worker

    Under the direction of the classroom teacher and professional resource staff, Developmental Support Workers support students with exceptionalities such as physical disabilities, developmental delays, autism, hearing loss and behaviour disorders.

    Duties and responsibilities of this position also require supporting the physical and hygienic needs of our students.

    Applicants must have a two-year diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, in a related field. Examples of education could include the following :

  • Developmental Services Worker (DSW)
  • Social Services Worker (SSW)
  • Early Childhood Education (ECE)
  • Educational Assistant (EA)
  • Child and Youth Care Worker

    Under the direction of the classroom teacher and professional resource staff, Child and Youth Care Workers support students with exceptionalities such as behaviour disorders, autism, developmental delays, acquired brain injuries, and physical disabilities.

    Duties and responsibilities of this position also require supporting the physical and hygienic needs of our students.

    Applicants must have a three year diploma or degree from a recognized post-secondary institution or a related discipline is required.

    Examples of education could include the following :

  • Child Care Worker (CCW)
  • Child and Youth Worker (CYW)
  • Bachelor of Social Work (BSW, MSW)
  • Special Education Assistant

    Under the direction of the classroom teacher and professional resource staff, Special Education Assistants support special needs students.

    Duties and responsibilities of this position also require supporting the physical and hygienic needs of our students.

    Applicants must possess a minimum of a Grade 12 Secondary School Graduation Diploma (S.S.G.D.) or equivalent with six months or more experience supporting students with special needs and exceptionalities.

    Health Assistant

    Under the direction of the classroom teacher and professional resource staff, Health Assistants support students with exceptionalities such as physical disabilities and developmental delays, autism, behavior disorders, acquired brain injuries, hearing and vision loss.

    These services can be provided in a wide variety of educational settings such as standard classrooms, specialized facilities and work placements.

    Duties and responsibilities of this position also require supporting the physical and hygienic needs of our students.

    In addition, in order to meet the needs of our students, staff assignments may be divided between more than one location.

    Therefore, employees are required to have access to regular transportation in order to travel between sites. The Board also reserves the right to transfer support staff between locations depending upon student and system needs.

    Applicants must have :

  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma with a recognized Registered Practical Nurses Diploma (2 years) is required, or a related discipline is required.
  • Minimum one year related experience is required
  • If you are interested in an Developmental Support Worker, Child and Youth Care Worker, Health Assistant or Special Education Assistant position, it will be necessary for you to complete our on-line application.

    Permanent Positions : These can be both part-time (17.5 hours per week) and full-time (35 hours per week).

    Temporary Positions : This is a position that is available for a period in excess of 30 consecutive working days to replace a permanent employee who is absent on an approved leave of absence (e.

    g. pregnancy, parental, educational or medical leave).

    Casual : On call, as-needed basis to cover absences of permanent employees ranging from daily occurrences up to 30 consecutive working days.
