Job Summary The Emerging and Digital Media Specialist manages the development, creation, implementation and support of the Emerging Media support program and services within UBC Okanagan Studios and Digital Technology Hub, focused on providing emerging media and digital content services to the Okanagan Campus Faculty, Staff and Students.
The position gathers requirements from stakeholders, community partners and emerging media industry, and both undertakes and oversee the project management and supervision of activities related to supporting emerging media initiatives for UBC Okanagan Campus community.
The position is responsible for preparing and implementing strategic service plans for the broad application of emerging media services;
participating in the design, development and implementation of digital media projects : managing project budgets; participating in faculty and university-
wide emerging media initiatives; and advising Faculty, Students and Staff on the development of emerging media resources and technologies in teaching and administration for the University of British Columbias Okanagan Campus.
The primary responsibility of the Emerging and Digital Media Specialist is to direct, build, design and support the visual user experience and developer support for UBC Okanagan campus.
This encompasses the creation of virtual worlds (VR / AR / XR etc.) that show alternative outcomes determined by a simulator, visualization translation and other digital media supported by UBC Okanagan Studios and Digital Technology Hub.
The incumbent will build, train and manage a team of volunteer / paid student emerging media developers, 3D animators and project coordinators.
They will work in close cooperation with the UBC Studios Team and the Visualization and Emerging Media Librarian and support staff.
This work serves the full needs of the UBC Okanagan campus focusing on emerging and digital media including emphasis on teaching and learning, research and special events.
The range of produced materials may include videos, animations, audio, VR and AR for distribution on the Web and TV, and used as teaching objects, promotional assets and / or research funding applications.
Emerging and Digital Media Specialist is required to work in both an office environment and offsite, and may be required to work some early mornings, evenings and weekends.
Organizational Status UBC IT, UBC Studios Okanagan provides a suite of emerging and digital media services to the diverse Okanagan Campus community including strategic enterprise-
wide projects. This position reports to the Manager / Executive Producer, UBC Studios, Okanagan. The Incumbent is a senior member of the UBC Studios team and manages high level emerging and digital media services to all clients with specialized digital media production and development requirements which may include;
alumni, faculty, staff, students and community partners.
This position manages the development and support of emerging and digital media assets and programs for use across all client and high-
level stakeholder environments including class support and learning objects, research and special events. This position also interacts with other University technology and digital media professionals on relevant projects and task.
The position will work in collaboration with the Visualization and Emerging Media Librarian and support staff, The Centre for Teaching and Learning, as well as the UBC Emerging Media Lab in Vancouver.
The position requires extensive contact with researchers, course instructors, students, and staff, including other IT Analysts and Systems Administrators at both UBC campuses.
This position also interacts with other University technology and media professionals on relevant projects and task. Work Performed 1.
Manages the Emerging and Digital Media portfolio within UBC Studios and UBC System by :
Strategically planning for UBC Okanagan emerging media and digital media presence at UBC Okanagan campus.
Designs, develops, implements and maintains programming and services within the Digital Technology Hub which includes the Visualization and Emerging Media Studio.
Leads and directs presentations, workshops, and classes, and designs, creates and shares learning materials and guides for users, to facilitate the creation of a variety of media visualizations including VR, AR, XR, etc.
along with the use of visualization and immersive tools.
Develops and maintains policies and procedures in accordance with prescribed standards.
Manages the design, development and implementation of a wide variety of emerging and digital media projects.
Strategically advises faculty on the development of emerging and digital media technologies and acts as the subject matter expert for the Okanagan campus.
Develops overall systems and application design, researches and evaluates vendor supplied applications, provides customized solutions or develop recommendations, and implements accordingly.
2.Enables and oversees the effective use of digital and emerging media to support teaching, learning and research at UBC Okanagan campus by
Collaborates with the Visualization and Emerging Media Librarian and CTL to explore, design and provide support in emerging technologies for the UBC Okanagan community.
Consults and collaborates with researchers, course instructors, students, and staff to contribute expertise to visualization, emerging media and other digital media projects, research, practice, teaching, and classes in a range of disciplines.
Works with the Visualization and Emerging Media Librarian in the development and establishment of policies and procedures pertaining to the Visualization and Emerging Media Studio.
Partners with internal outreach teams and with campus service and support areas to promote and encourage use of campus visualization and emerging media creation, technology and spaces
Provides training and expert liaison for UBC's Okanagan campus researchers and course instructors across Faculties and Schools.
Builds and maintains good working relationships and collaborates with others to achieve research objectives.
3.Provides excellence in technical and customer service by :
Provides expert consultation, support, teaching, and training to users about tools, techniques, and methods.
Responsible to ensure appropriate security is maintained across technologies and services supporting emerging media.
Leads the identification and deployment of applications, software, and technology requirements.
Oversees software development lifecycle and follows appropriate programming / development methodologies and best practices.
Communicates with stakeholders of varying technical ability and subject matter expertise
Working as part of a team making presentations to faculty, staff and outside organizations.
Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current digital media technology, techniques and tools, and provides input to strategies for ongoing support and upgrade of these systems.

This position may manage and supervise the work of student volunteers and staff. This position may supervise the work of digital media support staff, junior and student staff members and may be required to train staff on systems, software and hardware used by IT, Media and Classroom Services staff and clients.
This position will provide back up for Manager's absence. Consequence of Error / Judgement Errors in the development, implementation and support of advanced computing and digital media systems could cost the University many thousands of dollars in lost productivity, could impact the timely delivery of services to instructors, researchers and research groups e.
g. faculty, staff, and students as well as affect research time. Errors in the recommendation of proper technology, content and / or emerging and digital media solutions could also be a determent to UBC both financially and with UBC's outstanding reputation.
Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Master's degree in a field related to the responsibilities of the position (such as digital media, information sciences, data sciences, or design) preferred.
A minimum of 5 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Work experience with integrating technical and artistic expertise and professionals. SKILLS :
Experience developing and supporting emerging and digital media, and visualizations in teaching, scholarship and scholarly communication projects
Experience using virtual reality and visualization tools such as Unity.
Working knowledge of VR / AR development tools such as Unity, Unreal Engine, Blender, WebVR Tools, ARToolKit Apple ARKit, Google ARCore.
Experience in operating VR / AR equipment such as HTC Vive, Oculus, Meta, Microsoft Hololens, etc.
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Ability to work collaboratively with staff at all organizational levels and comfortable working with executives, senior academic leaders and public figures.
Ability to initiate ideas and propose creative solutions.
Maintains a current awareness of emerging trends in Reality (VR / AR / XR etc) and Visualization.

Experience with Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Creative Cloud, Streaming media, video encoding formats and other video editing software.
