The University of the Fraser Valley’s South Asian Studies Institute (the Institute) invites applications from a qualified Political Science Researcher who wishes to be considered for the position of Social Scientist : South Asian Canadian Legacy Project (SACLP) for a two-year term.

Terms of the position are subject to government funding guidelines.Under the direction of the Director of the South Asian Studies Institute at UFV and a Working Team, the Social Scientist will take a critically important role in researching and recording the labour movements in BC that involved South Asian Canadians over the last century as part of the South Asian Canadian Digital Archive (SACDA).

SACLP is a multi-faceted diverse history-heritage project that includes initiatives in public education, K-12 curriculum, travelling exhibits, social history, labour movements and a Canadian digital archive.

The work of the Social Scientist is anchored within an interdisciplinary SACLP strategy to engage with the larger South Asian Canadian community, relevant stakeholders and leaders in BC.

The strategy will mobilize community stakeholders, government agencies, the historic and heritage sectors, unions and collective groups, the GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) sectors, civic centers, and businesses in BC to capitalize on inter-connected networks.

The Social Scientist will work with colleagues and program partners internally at UFV and externally across BC. You will research archival information and develop an online archival record and resource on labour movements across BC including the work of unions, activist organizations and individuals that have had relevance to BC’s South Asian Canadian communities.Responsibilities include :

  • Research the provincial archive of labour movements in BC related to the South Asian Canadian community
  • Plan, develop, design and implement the collected archive on the SACDA platform
  • Determine methodology, conduct ethnographic research, and undertake analysis of the collected record of labour movements in BC
  • Write content for the archive for SACDA and a limited print series
  • Work closely with SACDA design staff to create / design the labour movements database and archive platform
  • Contribute to relevant project committees and engage with stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain clear communications and collaborative relationships with SACL Project staff and students and with external partner organizations and advisors
  • Assist with mentoring undergraduate students in the research projects.
  • Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in the Social Sciences
  • Minimum of three of related research experience
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have worked on projects that include research that links politics, law, heritage, history and digital archives
  • Demonstrated evidence of progressive career development
  • Experience with managing research projects, tracking deliverables, monitoring and reporting on project progress, and timely evaluations
  • Proven ability in conflict resolution
  • Applicants should have a demonstrated record of work with South Asian Canadian communities
  • The applicant will be a creative thinker, possess superior diplomacy skills and have the ability to draw together stakeholders from a diversity of backgrounds
  • The applicant will have excellent interpersonal, written / oral communication skills in English, Hindi and Punjabi
  • The applicant should have exceptional organizational and time management skills, be self-directed, proactive, accountable, and discrete.
  • The applicant will have a proven ability to work in a collaborative team environment, and work to deadlines, multiple demands, and priorities
