Job Summary :
The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist is a subject matter expert on managing Non-Occupational (personal illness / injury) and Occupational (work-related illness / injury) files for unionized and non-unionized employees at all levels of the organization.
This role focuses primarily on case management particularly in matters related to Stay at Work (SAW), Return to Work (RTW) and Attendance Management.
The Specialist provides expert level dedicated support to operations and corporate services staff and management to help reduce costs associated with Occupational / Non-occupational illnesses / injuries, disabilities and absenteeism.
Key Responsibilities :
Ensures SAW and RTW planning and documentation and applies policies and procedures to ensure efficient, productive and cost effective results for both Occupational / Non-Occupational illnesses / injuries and disabilities.
Supports and educates / trains managers in navigating the WCB / WSIB, medical leave, SAW / RTW, accommodation, LTD and ARP programs and processes.
Guides employees in their efforts of SAW and RTW goals.
Contributes to client / patient safety by supporting employees with SAW / RTW processes that provide safe care at the client level.
Manages LTD claims files, liaising between employees, insurance carrier and the manager to facilitate RTW activities, permanent accommodations.
Manages the development of temporary / permanent accommodation requests by corresponding directly with external health care professionals to obtain necessary medical information.
Provides recommendations to managers regarding accommodation approval / denial outcome and communicates decisions to the employee and union.
Provides support to Labor Relations in the handling of files where performance issues and medical issues overlap.
Employs appropriate resources to ensure effective file management including Human Recourses (Labor Relations, Pension & Benefits), payroll, WCB / WSIB, LTD insurance carries and external service providers as required.
Leads the Attendance Review Program for unionized and non-unionized staff to include analysis of payroll data for triggers, sending introduction letters and attending Step meetings with managers as necessary to ensure consistent application of the program.
Prepares for and leads or participates in WSIB / WCB / WCAT appeals.
Attends and facilitates WCB / WSIB meetings as appropriate.
Provides regular metrics and key performance indicators to the Director of Safety Health & Wellness, Local Management Teams and provincial Occupational Health and Safety Committees.
Identifies and pursues areas of WCB & WSIB cost relief and injury reduction.
Provides guidance on compliance with the Provincial WCB / WSIB legislation, Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Human Rights Legislation, and VON policies and Procedures.
Maintains expertise in applicable health and safety-related legislation, requirements and industry practice and their impact on VON operations.
Contributes to the principles of customer-focused services and continuous quality improvement and proactively identifies areas for process improvement.

Education, Designations and Experience :
Post-secondary education in Human Resources with a focus on Health and Safety.
Minimum 5 years experience in health & safety (occupational and non-occupational claims management) and 3 years of experience with attendance and absenteeism management activities.
Demonstrated experience in RTW / SAW initiatives and accommodation processes.
Extensive knowledge of Provincial Worker’s Compensation legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, and workplace hazard and control measures.
Knowledge of Human Rights legislation.
Experience working within a unionized environment.
Experience working in health care preferred
Proficiency in Window OS, MS Office Suites programs
SAP and Procura experience an asset..
Must have personal vehicle and possess both a current driver’s license and proof of vehicle insurance.
A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required.
The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required
