Job Summary :

Are you adventurous and ready to drive to up Northern Ontario at a moment's notice and stay for up to 14 days at a time?

If you are, you will want to join VON nurses from across Northern Ontario to help provide emergency and non-emergency medical services to fire fighters around the clock, as well as setting up and maintaining the medical supplies and equipment required for the first aid stations.

Responsibilities :

  • Assume responsibility for the set up and maintenance of a treatment station
  • Keep accurate documentation
  • Provides assessment and treatment of minor wounds / injuries / illness on a 24-hour on-call basis
  • Prepares for and provides leadership in crisis managent for fire line disasters
  • Makes recommendations to the MNR to ensure optimal base and line camp safety
  • Works within a quality management framework to continuously increase customer satisfaction through improved activities
  • Conducts satisfaction / feedback surveys
  • Health and Safety Accountabilities :

  • Functions and reports in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and VON policies and procedures
  • Functions in accordance with VON's risk management policies, procedures, practices and guidelines designed to promote and protect client safety
  • Participates in health and safety training including WHMIS & TDG and applies this knowledge in the workplace
  • Wears or uses any / all protective equipment or clothing provided by the VON & MNR and does not interfere with protective devices to change or negate their functions
  • Reports the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device of which he / she is aware, and which may endanger him / herself or another worker
  • Reports any violations of the Health and Safety Act or the regulations, or the existence of any hazard
  • Does not use or operate any equipment, machine, or device in an unsafe minor, or work in a manner that may endanger him / herself or any other worker
  • Ensures all workplace incidents are reported in a timely manner in accordance with legislation, and VON policies and procedures for workplace injuries and incidents
  • Education, Designations and Experience :

  • Must be Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Ontario
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, working in complex, dynamic environments in remote locations OR;
  • 3 years’ experience in critical care, acute care, emergency room
  • Skill Requirements :

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of intra / inter agency teams
  • IV skills essential
  • Ability to provide leadership within the organization
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high stress environment
  • Critical thinking & multi-tasking skills
  • Other :

  • Possession of a current driver’s permit and proof of vehicle insurance
  • Must have own vehicle
  • Current CPR Certification and automatic external defibrillator (AED), Critical Incident Stress
  • Management training
  • Ability to speak French is an asset in French Designated areas
  • A current and original copy of a satisfactory Criminal Records Check is required upon the start of your employment

  • Bend, push, pull, grip, reach, kneel, crouch using good body mechanics; Walk, sit, stand, climb stairs; Fine hand movements
