The Material Planner is responsible for developing detailed material plans, schedules and work packages for production trades.
The role requires the development, scheduling and budgeting of work packages that integrate material and resources in support of program milestones and financial goals.
The Material Planner reports to the Supervisor, Materials Planning and has no direct reports.
Duties / Accountabilities
Input of material master data, BOM’s, structures of material work package by schedules and budgets into VSY’s MRP system.
Utilizes build strategy output (block breakdown, erection sequence, zone definition, and block, grand block and test strategies) to develop detailed material work packages for all production trades.
Develops production material work packages that include material information, material master data and material structures for production execution.
Coordinates sub-contractor and tier 1 input into work instructions and material work packages to reflect preferred production methods and processes.
Schedules material work packages within windows defined by the Program office (milestone, key event and zone schedules) to ensure Production and Program are aligned and in sync.
Budgets material work packages based on contract estimates and historical performance to create baselines for production work execution.
Assist in developing the vessel’s material ordering schedule with demand data and dates for technical information in support of the design schedule and in-
yard equipment need dates.
Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree (in Engineering is preferred). MRP / Materials Management Certificate combined with sufficient employment experience may be considered.
3 years’ experience in material planning at a large manufacturing firm, preferably in the shipbuilding industry.
Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies
Knowledge of shipbuilding operations with a detailed understanding of the relationship between engineering, procurement, detail design, and production operations.
Understanding schedules generated by independent planning systems.
Understanding and interpretation of outputs from CAD / CAM software suite including ShipConstructor (preferred) and AutoCAD.
Experience using an ERP system in a large manufacturing environment.
Knowledge of EVMS principles and their application in monitoring, reporting and controlling work activities.
