This position is to provide day to day supervision and guidance of laboratory staff and research activities as directed by the lead scientist.
Part of the emergency response capabilities of the Biodosimetry program is to perform biological dose estimations in the event of a nuclear or radiological event.
The Scientist will also be required to participate in emergency Biodosimetry scoring and evaluations besides supporting the R&D work.
This position will report directly to the Biodosimetry R&D lead Scientist in the Dosimetry Research Section in the R&H Branch.
The recruited candidate will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day supervision and management of research activities that have been approved / assigned to him / her by lead scientist and / or section head and / or Branch Manager.
This includes, but is not limited to the following :
Assists in supervision of technologists and students working on projects to meet deliverables and scope.
Supports existing and new research by conducting biological research in the area of biodosimetry methods as well as contributes to proposing new project ideas.
Analyzes generated data of own or team’s results of experiments and contributing to writing of scientific articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals, as well as research reports for internal or external customers.
Prepares and presents talks and poster presentations at internal and external seminars and meetings when requested by lead scientist and approved by Branch Manager.
Provides day-to-day guidance for technical staff and students as directed by the lead scientist.
Produces administrative, progress and technical reports.
Ensures that all activities are carried out with due diligence relative to established Quality Assurance / Quality Control requirements and Standard Operating Procedures, applicable environmental and safety regulations and requirements (industrial and radiological), and company policies and procedures.
A Master or PhD from a university of recognized standing, in Biology, with a speciality in Cytogenetics is required.
Both theoretical knowledge and practical skills / experience in Cytogenetics, Cell and Molecular Biology, DNA repair, DNA damage response, Epigentics as they relate to questions in Dosimetry, Radiobiology and Cytotoxicity as demonstrated by course work, thesis and any other applicable experience is required.
Prior experience in a biology lab and demonstrated knowledge of standard cell biology techniques and reagent preparation in aseptic cell culture technique is required.
Experience in handling human blood cells and / or animal cell cultures is required.
Prior experience in performing cytogenetic analysis is preferred, including one or several of the following applications or assays : karyotype analysis (G-banding), Fluorescence plus Geimsa staining (FPG), micronucleus assay, dicentric chromosome aberration (DCA) assay, Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) analysis, spectral karyotyping (SKY) analysis, M-Band analysis.
Experience with flow cytometry and its applications is highly preferable.
Prior experience with light and fluorescent microscopic techniques and the ability to perform analysis at a microscope is required.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in statistical analysis for biological data and setting up experimental parameters is required.
Effective written and verbal and communication skills in English to present results of research to both scientific and lay (non-professional) audience as demonstrated by a record of conference and other oral presentations is required.
Knowledge of software such as Excel, Word, Power Point, Sigma Plot, End Note, Reference Manager, qPCR-related software, DNA primer design software and DNA sequence analysis software and other bioinformatics tools is required.
Demonstrated ability to document research results for peer-reviewed scientific literature, internal reports / memos, etc.
under supervision and mentorship of the lead scientist is required.
Basic knowledge of the biological effects of radiation and a general understanding of Radiation Protection principles is strongly preferred.
Group-2 Radiation Protection training, or ability to acquire it, is required.
Must be immunized against Hepatitis A / B, or willing to obtain such immunization.
Must have demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member, and to respond to challenging schedule demands, is required.Overtime or flexible work schedules may occasionally be required.
