Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing Operations, the Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for the oversight of the production Manufacturing Engineering department.
This includes overall responsibility for maintaining documented manufacturing processes and continually working to improve the efficiency of these processes.
This position is expected to provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to employees across departments in this regard.
This position holds people and budgetary management responsibility and is responsible for improving plant efficiencies. Supervision and guidance are provided to the Manufacturing Engineering Team by this position
The ideal candidate will have a high level of technical expertise and skill level. They will be capable of leading a team to increase efficiencies and reduce costs.
The successful candidate can work under pressure, has strong analytical and problem-solving skills and can be and adaptable to handling change.
They must have superior time management and organizational skills, as well as, detail orientated.
Some of the responsibilities include :
Overseeing Manufacturing Process Improvement Activities across Manufacturing Facilities
Ensure Documentation of MFG Processes are maintained (Process Flows, BOM)
Creation and maintenance of assembly / process flow documentation for manufacturing or rework activities.
Creation and maintenance of Work Instructions for manufacturing or rework activities.
Proactively identify where processes can be adapted and optimized to ensure cost effectiveness
Ensuring that all assembly processes operate within lean manufacturing principles.
Conduct workflow analysis and make recommendations for improvement in material handling and floor layout.
Create implementation plans, including product launch, modifications to manufacturing layout, labour plan, or system configurations.
Recommend and plan implementation of CAPEX investments for plant efficiency and manufacturing growth
Oversee the non-standard (EA) approval process
Collaborate to refine and implement productivity and efficiency metrics for Manufacturing
Leadership and supervision of the Manufacturing Engineering Team
Provide leadership to the Engineering team
Recruit, train, coach and performance manage employees
Provide mentoring of employees in support of process improvement activities
Set performance objectives for all employees and conduct performance reviews to ensure objectives are being met.
Ensuring Program & Project Management of MFG Improvement Projects and initiatives
Prioritization of Improvement Activities (Business Case, ROI, Program Management)
Ensuring manufacturing process improvements include a cost benefit analysis and realization.
Tracking of Return on Investment for Manufacturing CAPEX
Developing a positive workplace environment and culture that is characterized by good teamwork, open candid and constructive communication, collaborative working relationships amongst workers and between workers and the leadership team.
Planning performance year, including respecting and incorporating key performance indicators; conducting performance discussions in accordance with processes and procedure.
Managing the budget, including ensuring expenditures are within budget, seeking approval if a variance is required, and preparing any reporting that is required.
New Product Support
Interface with R&D, Manufacturing, IT, and Marketing on Product Design and new product launch
Conduct comprehensive cost effectiveness analyses of new designs to ensure that all costs are identified, including labour costs.
Define the implementation plan with particular emphasis on the timeline to achieving profitability.
Ensure practices for manufacturing efficiency and accuracy are addressed throughout the design process, in order to implement new products and processes that are safe and improve quality.
Work closely with R&D, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing and Maintenance to develop manufacturing parameters (equipment requirements, process flow diagram, equipment layout, labour plan)
Primary Qualifications Include :
Engineering degree in appropriate field, e.g. B. Eng (Mechanical or equivalent).
Minimum 5 years' experience as an engineer in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
Experience of taking at least one project through launch plus at least one year of subsequent production.
Expertise in Lean Manufacturing Techniques.
Experience of participation in a product development team from inception to manufacturing launch.
Additional training as a supervisor or manager, plus at least five (5) years of supervisory and / or management experience within manufacturing is required.
Proven ability to communicate difficult or contentious information in a straightforward and respectful manner is required.
Ability to grow and develop a team to be successful, including the ability to guide / coach / mentor staff and provide direction and correction in a consistent, timely, and respectful manner is required.
Ability to establish credibility and be decisive, while maintaining tact and a participative management style is required.
Ability to be open-minded, honest, fair, supportive, and accountable for own actions is required.
Ability to encourage collaboration, teamwork, and results is required.
Knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation is required.
Experience managing budgets is required.
Experience with the following : AutoCADSolidWorksMicrosoft Office (Excel, Word & Outlook) is required.
