Position Overview Under the general supervision of the EHS Team Leader, the EHS Advisor actively promotes a healthy and safe culture to all levels of employees and staff within the organization using the policies and procedures of Aecon’s Environmental Health and Safety manual.

This position is based in Calgary, Alberta supporting our Civil West - Major Projects Division. Key Responsibilities

  • Employee health and safety orientation
  • Site specific safety orientation to workers, owners and clients
  • Training supervisors and staff on Aecon’s Health, Safety and Environmental Manual
  • Training employees in fall protection, confined space entry, traffic protection, traffic control person, WHMIS, respiratory protection, emergency response
  • Coordinate training such as WHMIS, First Aid, Fork lift, etc.
  • Conduct and review workplace inspections and audits
  • Conduct and review behavioral based observations and Safety Opportunities in the workplace
  • Update Material Safety Data Sheets as required
  • Develop workplace plans such as emergency evacuations, fire emergency, traffic controls, fall protection
  • Distribution of safety material, supplies and equipment
  • Promoting the Aecon safety system to potential industry clients
  • Participate as a management member of Joint Health and Safety Committees
  • Assist in quality assurance information gathering or other shop / office interface responsibilities
  • Conduct studies and analyze accident trends
  • Inspects project facilities and recommends corrective actions
  • Coordinate activities of site-safety coordinators
  • Working with the Claims Administrator to assist with workers compensation claims and associated activities
  • Develop return to work and modified work programs
  • Accident / Incident investigations
  • Mediate health and safety issues for resolution
  • Prepare and assist with external safety audits, 3rd party audits, client audits
  • Coordination of environmental issues
  • Gather and provide statistical information to Estimating for tender packages
  • Coordinate site safety statistics, setting site goals and targets and forward to EHS Administrator
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Required Knowledge & Skills

  • A minimum of 3 years working experience in an EHS Advisor role
  • Completion of NCSO designation or equivalent OHS education
  • Must have a valid auditor certification
  • Experience in Civil Construction health and safety
  • Familiar with construction terminology
  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and to be proactive, must be a self-starter and motivator
  • Ability to work in a team environment and a Team player
