The primary purpose of this position is to design, construct, operate and maintain experimental apparatus to perform experiments related to fuel and fission product behaviour under accident conditions and during fuel oxidation, and to facilitate chemical operations related to those experiments.

Work supports the current CANDU fleet, Small Modular Reactor deployment, the Canadian Federal Family and the stabilization of research reactor fuels for waste management.

High temperature (300 C to 2500 C) furnaces are often used in conjunction with gas flow and motion control systems. Instrumentation includes gamma spectrometers, computers, data acquisition systems, pressure transducers, thermocouples, and gas flow meters.

  • Design, construct, operate and maintain experimental apparatus
  • Contribute to the design and construction of electrical and / or mechanical apparatus, facilities, and related instrumentation
  • Install and set up instruments (e.g., thermocouples, pressure transducers, liquid and gas flow meters) as needed for experiments
  • Maintain instruments (e.g., flow meters, data acquisition systems) in a calibrated state
  • With appropriate safety measures in place, perform experiments with hazardous materials and gases, and radioactive materials
  • Assist in preparation of design drawings (e.g., mechanical wiring / circuit diagrams, instrument schematics, experimental apparatus designs, specification documents)
  • Interact closely and proactively with fellow lab staff and professional staff to advance team projects
  • Represent particular projects requiring interactions with engineering or trades groups
  • Participate in writing and review of procedural documents for the laboratory
  • Procure materials and equipment, as required
  • Coordinate with Engineering on design change processes, as required
  • Help ensure safe operation of the laboratory
  • Assist in the development of laboratory procedures and work plans
  • Become proficient in the rules and regulations (e.g., JHA and RWA / RLP) for the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation of the Fission Product Behaviour laboratory

  • The work is generally in a laboratory environment with some hazardous conditions (radiation sources, fissionable materials, electrical power supplies, high temperature fluids and surfaces, hazardous gases and chemicals)
  • Some handling of lead (in compliance with laboratory safety guidelines) will be required
  • The employee has access to personal protective equipment and to extensive training to understand the hazards
  • The employee may occasionally work overtime or irregular hours, particularly during hot-cell experiments; travel is minimal

  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in mechanical engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, instrumentation technology or equivalent
  • A minimum of two years of relevant working experience in the following areas : Construction, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical equipment (including instrumentation)Construction, operation and maintenance of gas flow systemsOperation or construction of data acquisition systemsOperation of furnaces and temperature controllersWorking in a radiation environmentWorking with hazardous materials and gasesWorking with electrical safety
  • You will have : Strong mechanical aptitudeStrong electrical or electronic aptitudeAbility to use computer aided design software like AutodeskGood verbal and written communication skillsGeneral computer literacy in word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office suite of applications)Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team settingGood organizational skills and initiative
