    ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

    We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Accountant to join our Finance team in North Vancouver .

    Reporting to the Accounting Manager, Service Delivery, the primary responsibility of this position is to manage financial statement audits for the Nation and its subsidiaries.

    Under the direction of the manager and with input from the Director, the incumbent assumes responsibility for preparation of the Nation’s project and capital asset budget and related amendments, performs advanced ongoing and year-

    end accounting duties, coordinates and prepares monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for distribution to Directors and Council.

    As a Chartered Professional Accountant, the incumbent has a strong understanding of various accounting frameworks including International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).

    Other responsibilities will include, but are not limited to :

  • Manages financial statement audits for the Squamish Nation and its subsidiaries; coordinates preparation and submission of all necessary information / confirmations, completes first draft of entity level and consolidated financial statements (notes, schedules, etc.
  • and follows up as necessary.

  • Reconciles accounts, prepares year-end working papers and coordinates preparation and submission of corporate tax returns.
  • Participates as team member in the preparation of personal income tax returns for Squamish Nation member. Runs monthly integrity reports and resolves any issues, oversees development of ad-

    hoc financial reports for departments as requested and prepares monthly financial reports for funders. Completes journal entries relevant to scope of work.

  • Ensures staff perform month-end duties, accounting managers review financial statements before distribution, balance sheet / trial balance / schedule 1 are balanced with each other, and resolves any issues.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements for distribution to Directors and Council.

  • Creates new programs / accounts and enters related budgets and amendments for capital projects (within job cost module), service delivery programs, and the Squamish Nation Trust projects.
  • Prepares and reviews annual Squamish Nation Trust financial statements with accounting managers and Director. Presents monthly SNT financial statements at trust meetings.
  • Prepares audit working papers and manages external auditors. Liaises with the Project Administrator and Administrative Trustee and is responsible for setting up new projects / business units.

  • Maintains capital asset register for the Squamish Nation and its subsidiaries. Identifies and records monthly capital asset entries including amortization, additional / disposals, and construction in progress.
  • Prepares monthly fixed asset reconciliation and works with departments and accounting team to resolve issues as they arise.

  • Adheres to workplace health & safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
  • Participates as member of the Service Delivery and Finance & Administration teams.
  • THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

    In addition, the ideal candidate will also have :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Human Resources or related / relevant field from a recognized post-
  • secondary institution plus a Professional Accounting Designation (i.e. CPA, ACCA.).

  • 6 - 7 years of directly-related experience in the majority of specialties listed in job description including year-end accounting, involvement in audits, budgeting, etc.
  • As career progresses, incumbent will be required to successfully complete job-required, short-term upgrading, training and courses relating to accounting, audits, accounting software, and other training / courses relating to position, etc.
  • Exposure to a First Nations accounting environment is an asset.
  • Experience as an advanced user of Microsoft Office Applications Outlook (Email), Word, Excel, etc. and with tax preparation software.
  • Research and report / memo writing.
  • Working experience with a large scale computerized accounting system. Experience with JD Edwards is an asset.
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations Community (particularly Squamish) is an asset.
  • Must have a valid BC Driver’s License Class 4 or 5. Class 7N may be considered.
  • Must have a reliable vehicle and current auto insurance.
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Must successfully complete Criminal Record Check as per Squamish Nation Policy.
  • May be willing to consider a Diploma in a relevant / related field plus a Professional Accounting Designation with 8 10 years of directly-related experience.
