As an Interpreter, at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, you will inspire, and connect children and adults to Animal Conservation and help them Get Closer’ to the natural world around them.

Interpreters will be responsible for the following tasks :

  • Create and lead a variety of educational programs including school and group programs, day camps and birthday parties
  • Deliver drop-in programs for the general public which consist of roving, point interpretation, large group presentations and theatrical presentations
  • Discuss program requirements with parents, teachers and group leaders prior to programs
  • Implement overnight programs, travelling programs to schools and festivals
  • Supervise volunteers during programming
  • Assist in the maintenance of artifacts, exhibits and program supplies as well as the care and handling of small animals involved with the programs
  • Set up and take down of program activities
  • Independently complete administrative tasks
  • Conduct other related duties as required
  • Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 or high school equivalency
  • Experience delivering educational content such as leading activities or games with the general public, tour groups, or children
  • Highly developed verbal communication customer service skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local natural or exotic wildlife
  • Team player
  • Valid Standard First Aid & CPR
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Ability to converse in a second language is considered an asset
  • Experience working in another zoo or interpretive facility considered as an asset
  • Experience / knowledge of safe animal handling procedures considered as an asset
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence or provincial equivalent and ability to obtain a City Driver’s Permit considered as an asset
  • Testing may be required
  • NOTE :

  • Hired candidates must meet the eligibility requirements of the funder :
  • Currently enrolled and returning to school or a Post -Secondary Institution in the fall
  • Applicants must be Métis, First Nation or Inuit
  • New hires will be required to register with our identified funding partners
  • Hours : Up to 39 hours per week; shifts vary from 3 to 8 hours per day, Sunday through Saturday. Ability to work holidays, evenings and overnights, as required.
