The Director, University Ventures supports the advancement of the University’s standing as a leading global institution in the translation of academic research into entrepreneurial opportunities and to advance the use of University knowledge towards the generation of companies, jobs and prosperity in Canada.
The university has a number of programs that support entrepreneurs and startups, including University of Toronto Early-Stage Technologies (UTEST) which has a mandate to create and launch successful research and IP-based companies from the university.
The Director supports and provides leadership toward the overall UofT mandate to provide a high level of professional service to the University’s entrepreneurship community including : faculty members, students, academic administrators, administrative staff and representatives of partner institutions and sponsor organizations.
The Director provides institutional leadership towards the design and implementation of venture creation programs at the university, particularly for companies based on inventions and intellectual property (IP) created at the university.
The Director also supports the management of the university’s equity holdings in start-ups as a result of IP licensing and investments by the university, such as through the Connaught Fund.
The incumbent also has direct oversight of external and internal funding programs designed to support UofT entrepreneurs, and further builds a culture of innovation at the university at large.
The Director leads the UTEST program and serves on IPE management leadership team within the VPRI portfolio. Activities include leading and implementing UofT strategy in creating IP-based companies and programs that engage, support and create successful entrepreneurs.
The Director will have responsibility for UTEST program execution and development, collecting and analyzing program metrics, leading UT’s participation in various funding programs, partnerships and financial opportunities in support of entrepreneurship.
The Director oversees and leads UTEST staff which support program implementation, and has oversight of the physical spaces designated to the UTEST program and serves as a key liaison with UofT’s partners in this program including TIAP, the Connaught Fund, MaRS, TASHN Hospitals, legal firms and beyond.
Post graduate degree in science, engineering and / or business, or the equivalent acceptable combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated effectiveness in managing unionized staff, knowledge of HR policies and practices.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; Creative problem solving; Mentorship abilities.
Makes decisions regarding application of University policies, allocates own time, must be persuasive and diplomatic both inside and outside the University, must be able to balance conflicting demands on time.
