The R&D Mechanical Design Technologist will work as part of a team designing mechanical equipment in support of R&D, Environmental Remediation, Decommissioning & Waste Management, the CANDU Owners Group and the Canadian Nuclear Industry.
Principally, this person will prepare design drawings using 3D CAD software to enable the components to be manufactured.
With current and potential workloads, this position is required in order to meet our commitments.
To work with a team that designs, develops, procures and supplies specialty tooling for R&D, CRL internal customers and the Canadian nuclear industry.
The work is related to mechanical equipment development and may include the following :
Design and development of mechanical equipment and tooling.This includes defining requirements, generating concepts, and producing detailed drawings and general assembly drawings.
Diagnose design problems, recommend solutions and take actions based on consultation as appropriate to resolve technical issues during manufacturing, development testing, or field use.
Perform occasional hands on work, including mechanical assembly, testing, and field support as-required by branch resource needs.
Complete basic calculations or assessments to correctly size components and select appropriate commercially available items.
Produce and / or contribute technical writing to documents related to designed equipment.
Perform and / or assist with preparing purchase requisitions for commercially available and custom made components and systems.
The successful candidate will have a college diploma from a recognized institute of advanced technology in mechanical engineering technology or equivalent and must possess a high level of mechanical aptitude and have a good understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
Knowledge of design practices, mechanical drawing conventions, geometric dimensioning & Tolerancing and conventional tolerances is required.
Knowledge of 3D CAD software is required, with preference for Autodesk Inventor.
Good familiarity with manufacturing processes and machine shop practices is an asset.
Familiarity with instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems, pneumatics or hydraulics is an asset. Some knowledge of electrical and instrumentation control drawing software and design would be an asset.
The candidate must have good leadership skills and, in addition to having a robust technical skillset, must be comfortable mentoring and guiding others to help in their development and comfortable accepting mentoring and coaching.
Good verbal and written communication skills are required. The successful candidate must be fluent in English and able to follow and implement complex procedures.
The ability to properly communicate with external and internal customers and suppliers is required.
General computer literacy in word processing, a moderate to high degree of expertise with spreadsheet software and knowledge of record keeping (i.
e., keeping a lab notebook) is required.
The ability to manage time and materials within allocated budgets and schedules is required.
The successful candidate shall possess self-motivation and need limited or moderate direct supervision. Reliability and attendance records of applicants will be considered in this competition.
