Please note : The temporary irregular, on-call position hours of work are 0 to 40 hours per week.

  • What can I expect to do in this role?

    In this role you will :

  • Provide team leadership within the cooking operation for the correctional institution
  • Provide direction and support to inmate helpers
  • Prepare and assemble meals
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies
  • Ensure the safety and security of helpers, staff and equipment
  • Maintain proper sanitary conditions in the kitchen area
  • Mandatory requirements : You must have :

    You must have :

  • oral French language proficiency at the advanced minus level
  • possession of Journeyman Chef's Certificate as issued by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities OR sufficient acceptable experience in volume cooking
  • valid First Aid and Heartsaver Certificate or the ability to obtain
  • Specialized Food Service Knowledge and Skills :

    You have :

  • Knowledge of general cooking methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of food preparation and storage procedures including sanitation and food safety
  • Knowledge of food service guidelines in order to prepare a variety of foods, volume meals and restricted diets
  • Knowledge of the use of kitchen equipment and tools
  • Ability to demonstrate physical coordination, dexterity and accuracy in movement to operate kitchen tools and equipment
  • Other Essential Skills :

    Your skills and abilities will include :

  • Team leadership skills to provide instruction to subordinate helpers
  • Oral and written communication skills in order to tactfully interact with coworkers, address quantity / quality issues and to prepare reports on equipment problems
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation such as the Public Health Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Ability to ensure compliance with food preparation and storage, sanitation and food safety and proper equipment use guidelines
  • Analytical and problem solving skills in order to recognize and report equipment malfunctions, workplace hazards and food shortages

  • In accordance with the Ontario Public Service Employment Screening Checks Policy, the top candidate(s) may be required to undergo a security screening check.

    You will be responsible for obtaining the criminal record check at your own expense and provide it, along with your written consent, to the Transition and Security Office (TSO), HR Service Delivery Division to evaluate the results.

    If applicable, the TSO, with your written consent, will request and obtain any additional screening checks as indicated in the Additional Information / Address section above that were not obtained directly by you.

    Note : If a Vulnerable Sector Screening / Check is required, it must also be obtained in person at your local police service.)

    A record under the Criminal Code and / or other federal offence record(s) does not automatically mean you will be ineligible for the position.

    The screening check(s) will only be reviewed and evaluated by the TSO for the purpose of making a security clearance decision.

    The details of an individual's screening check(s) will be considered in specific relation to the duties and responsibilities of the position being filled.

    Screening check records will be maintained by the TSO and kept strictly confidential.
