Duties and Responsibilities
Working together and reporting to the Guiding Team, the Lead Pastor :
Primarily : Oversees and leads the preaching and teaching ministries of the church (Preacher / Teacher) Ensures solid biblical teaching Effectively communicates the Christian faith and lifestyle to people of diverse backgrounds and maturity Ably addresses issues in society, the community, and the church with practical, relevant biblical input Stays in touch with spiritual and personal needs of the flock (Shepherd / Counsellor) Makes an effort to know people and care for them lovingly and appropriatelyIs available for meetings and counselling sessions as needed with individuals, couples, families (using office hours when possible and after hours when reasonable)Our pastor needs to be a shepherd as well as a leader to offer soul-care to the people, not just direction for the organization.
Trains and develops leaders for effective ministry (Equipper) Disciples and mentors key leadersIdentifies new leaders and develops them through intentional training Provides pathways for emerging leaders to engage in leadership and ministry in the churchEncourages and empowers others to grow in their gifts and callings
SecondarilyCollaborates with the Leadership Team in implementing the vision, mission, core values, and strategic plan for the church (Planner / implementer) Contributes to review and development of vision Coordinates strategic planning to implement vision Establishes and communicates ministry priorities Oversees and leads the staff, volunteers, and ministry leader teams (Team Leader / Team Player) Leads staff meetings and maintains healthy staff working environmentAppoints, mentors, supervises, and reviews staff Delegates authority and ministry responsibilities to staff Oversees the pastoral ministries of the church (Pastoral Care Coordinator) Shapes the pastoral ministry of the church regarding weddings, funerals, special seasons, outreach events, etc.
Supports pastoral ministries to key church groups including children, youth, and interest groups Leads in responding to specific pastoral situations including conflict resolution, disciplinary processes, and critical pastoral incidents Provides a supportive environment for significant relationships and partnerships with the local community, city, and denominational / missional networks (Networker) Ensures a church presence, support, and / or a voice in times of need or challenge within the community Arranges for church representation at important public community events and functions Develops positive public relationships with possible rental groups, community groups, leaders, and organizations Participates in networks with other leaders for mutual equipping and support as availablePersonally contributes, and enables the church to contribute, to broader kingdom and mission-oriented activities, outreaches, and causes
Dependent on God - Pursues a healthy, growing relationship with God characterized by surrender, is committed to hearing and following God’s leading, and practices spiritual discipline(s)
Demonstrates a bold personal faith - Lives out and challenges others in a deeper walk with Christ
Models humble servant-leadership - Demonstrates humility of heart and willing service as part of his leadership role and responsibilities.
We are looking for a servant-hearted leader more than a leader with organizational skill
Models disciple-making as a personal value - Is a Christian who embodies the ideals of Helping people believe and helping believers grow
Strength in building and maintaining relationships - Is clearly not afraid of people, conversing with them, taking time to know them and then walking in life with them come what may
Supports opportunities for women in leadership roles in the church - Must be settled in his beliefs and personal position with the ideals of women in ministry and the roles they have in the local church
Maintains personal accountability relationship(s) - Must be a person who is not personally reclusive or isolated but, rather, enjoys the support of others who can and do have a voice on matters of what to believe and how to live.
Leads well Is growing as a collaborative, transparent leader in pastoral ministry to a multi-generational church and places a high value on growing the church through the empowerment of people in teams
Pursues a healthy life style Knows and is comfortable with himself; practices and enjoys a well-rounded lifestyle; and maintains a stable, supportive family environment as well as friendships and interests beyond vocational ministry
Responsive to community Engages the community and genuinely welcomes individuals to take their next step with God
Education and Experience Required
Master’s Degree preferred from an accredited Bible school and seminary with course work that focused on preparation for full-time ministry and / or pastorate
At least five years’ experience in a pastoral position. Lead pastor role experience preferred
Willing to pursue credentialing with Alberta Mennonite Brethren Conference
Potential salary commensurate with education and experience.
