Reporting to the Assistant Director, Human Resources (HR), the Employee Wellness & Equity Advisor is responsible for benefits administration, case management of leaves of absence and accommodations in employment for all employee groups.

The Advisor is also responsible for leading and supporting training, education and outreach on issues related to workplace wellness, human rights and equity.

Summary of Responsibilities :

  • In conjunction with the Director, Assistant Director, and other HR staff, support the University’s strategic directions and HR goals and objectives
  • Provide high-level customer service by ensuring seamless coordination of work with other HR staff
  • Advise employees and supervisors of their rights and obligations under collective agreements, government legislation, and related policies, as applicable
  • Lead the administration of benefits plans, including plan design optimization, implementation of plan changes, liaison with insurance carriers and broker, communication and posting information on OCAD U website and preparation of related reports
  • Administer benefits for all eligible employee groups, including benefits sign-on, coverage changes, claim inquiries, and related communication
  • Administer medical leaves of absence for all employee groups, including collecting required medical documentation, monitoring leave timelines, preparing documentation for benefits provider(s) and coordinating return to work arrangements, as applicable
  • Administer maternity / parental and personal leaves of absence for all employee groups
  • In accordance with the university’s Accommodation in Employment for Persons with Disabilities policy, coordinate applicant and employee accommodation needs;
  • liaise with the Offices of Diversity, Equity & Sustainability Initiatives and Safety & Security Services where appropriate

  • Facilitate the development of individualized accommodation plans based on an understanding of specific disability-related functional limitations;
  • implement, evaluate and modify accommodations as appropriate

  • Negotiate and act on sensitive and complex issues pertaining to employee accommodations, initiating consultations and case conferences where necessary
  • Provide support and advice on the development of Personalized Emergency Evacuation Procedures as needed
  • Advise supervisors on employee attendance, leave and accommodation issues as required
  • Prepare annual reporting on accommodations needs and make recommendations regarding related policy, procedures and budget requirements
  • Assist with initiatives to ensure compliance with AODA Standards
  • Participate as management-designated representative on the Joint Health & Safety Committee, as needed
  • Advance inclusion and equity at the university through outreach and support of employment equity initiatives (i.e. employment equity workforce survey, prioritization hiring program per the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC), etc.)
  • In conjunction with the Director and Assistant Director, research and develop policies and procedures, coordinate approval and assist with communication and implementation
  • In conjunction with the Assistant Director and the Senior HR Advisor, support in-house training initiatives related to wellness, human rights and equity, including assisting with development of annual training plan and facilitating information sessions, as required
  • Conduct employee research and analysis, and prepare internal and external reports as required; liaise with other departments and HR staff to coordinate and collect related employee data
  • Maintain currency in relevant employment and human rights legislation and ensure continuous development on new HR practices
  • Serve as backup for the other Human Resources Advisor, as required
  • Assist the Director, Assistant Director and other HR staff in related functions contributing to the successful operation of the Human Resources office
  • Qualifications :

  • Post-secondary degree in a related field, and a Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Minimum of four (4) years of work experience providing comprehensive, client-focused HR services, including case management of leaves and accommodations, in a unionized environment, preferably in a post-
  • secondary or public sector environment

  • Demonstrated understanding of the implications of disabilities as related to employment and in a broader context
  • Knowledge of and a sensitivity to disability issues and the provision of services to people with disabilities
  • Sound knowledge and experience interpreting and applying HR policies and practices, collective agreements, and employment legislation, such as the Employment Standards Act (ESA), Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA), Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA)
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships in a manner that gains trust, respect and cooperation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and judgement, with a demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive or confidential matters with discretion and tact
  • Outstanding oral & written communication skills, organizational skills, and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity and experience promoting a respectful learning and working environment for students, staff and faculty
  • Strong computer skills and a working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications and well-developed internet research skills;
  • knowledge of Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS)
