The Opportunity

The Product Implementation Specialist is tasked with facilitating all product development activities in support of Canfor’s specialty business programs.

In support of Canfor’s strategic goal of ongoing efforts in diversifying its product offerings and markets, the Specialist, Product Implementation, will be the key point person to collaborate between the Sales and operational teams, and will be responsible for the successful execution of all phases of specialty product development manufacturing at our Canadian operations.

Key Responsibilities

Facilitate the planning and analysis stage of new product development in collaboration with sales, supply chain, analytics and operational teams regarding

  • product specifications,
  • quality specifications,
  • baseline KPI’s for financial return analysis, and
  • develop product evaluation reports and product documentation to communicate overall impact to stakeholders
  • Lead the test and validation stage of new product development in partnership with operational teams

  • Ensure run specific information and product codes are made available to the mills and new items are tested in collaboration with QC personnel prior to trial runs
  • Develop initial cut plan specifications to guide operational execution
  • Collaborate with site & regional QC personnel to develop and monitor quality and grade standards in all production phases
  • Ensure on-time trial shipment in partnership with the transportation team
  • Evaluate and optimize the product trials based on operational and customer feedback
  • Facilitate the execution stage of regular specialties cut programs at Canfor’s Canadian sawmills

  • Provide input into ongoing sawmill and planer cut plans to ensure changes in customer requirements are incorporated
  • Gather and review grade outturn attainment and facilitate the identification of opportunities to further improve and standardize product portfolio, product quality and margins in collaboration with sales, operational teams and supply chain
  • Acquire and communicate sales demand of regular specialty programs and shipping schedules with supply chain and transportation
  • Guide the analytic process and establish decision support metrics to assist the operational teams in optimizing the specialties production from the right log, at the right mill, at the right time, in the right volume to maximize margin potential
  • Additional Responsibilities

    On occasion, the Production Implementation Specialist will be engaged on special projects and addtional assignments within the Specialty Sales Department :

  • Work with supply chain on high-value and high-volume product inquiries for impact analysis and integration into the organization’s production profile
  • In conjunction with the Specialty Sales team prepare program concepts of new product opportunities involving customer and operational consultation to determine product and pricing requirements, saw patterns and optimizations, program specifications and fibre supply needs
  • Research market demand and pricing trends for analysis of new and existing products or programs to develop marketing plans that expand our customer base and product application range
  • Create documentation and reports for internal and external communication related to Specialty Sales in consultation with the Manager, Specialty Product Market Development and Corporate Communications Team
  • Assist with the development of strategic business plans focused on providing program growth and innovation to Canfor’s specialty business in teamwork with Specialty sales and operational teams
  • Work with Manager to develop and communicate quarterly demand forecasts to supply chain, specialties sales, and operational teams to ensure overall coordination of specialties production within our existing supply chain and transportation processes
  • Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree / diploma in Wood Products and Sales and Marketing or a related field
  • 1-3 years sales & marketing work or related experience
  • Background in sawmill production and / or quality control, ideally with experience in mills cutting products other than dimension lumber
  • Knowledge and experience in kiln drying, lumber finishing and grading
  • Experience working with customers along with the capability to facilitate customer visits and respond to customer feedback and inquiry
  • The following attributes are considered an asset

  • Understanding of mill optimization systems, in particular primary breakdown optimizers and / or planer autograding systems
  • Experience in coastal BC custom cut or specialty sawmill operations
  • Experience in woodlands and a solid understanding of different tree species and their unique characteristics
  • Experience in secondary wood products manufacturing, in particular with emphasis on lineal based processing equipment such as resaws, planers and moulders
  • Skills & Abilities
