This position will report into the VP & Associate General Counsel, Corporate and Strategic Legal Initiatives and will provide valuable, practical and timely advice to our Canadian Investment Division, which has over $75B of invested assets.

You will provide and oversee the provision of legal support on diverse investment transactions and related matters, such as :

  • Private debt investments, including : financing proposals, lending agreements and security documents to implement and maintain commercial financing transactions, including renewable energy and other infrastructure financing, public private partnerships, project financing, bulk lease financing and innovative financing and investment transactions
  • Commercial and residential mortgage investments
  • Bond investments including derivatives transactions
  • Real estate investments and related matters
  • Oil and gas and mineral rights leases
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Your work will be wide-ranging and will provide the opportunity to demonstrate proven expertise in dynamic practice areas.

    You will have responsibility for a broad portfolio of legal matters and interact with and provide meaningful advice to senior management on a regular basis.

    Preference is for this role to be based in Winnipeg, but we are also open to Toronto candidates.

    Management / Leadership Function :

    You will be responsible for the efficient provision of legal services through management of the team’s work and associated administrative resources including :

  • Monitoring workload and assigning new matters to team members
  • Providing coaching and mentoring to team members and advancing their professional development
  • Liaising with clients to establish priorities, monitor client satisfaction, and coordinate legal resources and work effort
  • Recruiting, performance evaluation and compensation activities for lawyers in your team, and providing input on those matters for administrative assistants
  • Leading or contributing to strategic projects that support the Legal Division and the company generally
  • Qualifications and Competencies :

  • University Degree, Member of a Provincial Bar in good standing, and a minimum of 10 years’ work experience in relevant practice, including structuring and implementing complex commercial lending transactions
  • Strong leadership skills, and a demonstrated interest in managing a team and guiding lawyers and other legal professionals in their practice and career development
  • Strong oral communication skills, with the ability to synthesize and present issues with clarity to senior management in all business and functional areas
  • Excellent judgment, with the ability to identify key issues and provide an independent view to management in a clear and practical manner
  • Strong drafting, legal and written communication skills with a practical solution-oriented approach and the ability to use clear, plain language
  • Self-motivated and desire to work both independently and in a cooperative team environment
  • Highly focused with attention to detail
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills with experience resolving complex problems
  • Superior organizational and time management skills with experience addressing multiple projects at once
