Job Description

CPPIB is hiring a Senior Manager, Investment Tax. This role will be a key member of CPPIB’s Tax team, and advise CPPIB’s capital markets investment teams on the tax implications of the products they invest in to ensure the tax costs and risks are factored into CPPIB’s investment decisions and are in line with CPPIB’s risk appetite.

Role-Specific Accountabilities

  • Advise the teams investing into capital market products globally to ensure all tax costs and risks are understood and included in the investment decision process.
  • Manage CPPIB’s global network of tax advisors for capital markets products, including maintaining relationships, monitoring performance and providing feedback to improve service levels.
  • Advise and work with the Investment Operations team to resolve operational tax issues arising from CPPIB’s capital market investments, including reclaims for treaty and domestic based withholding taxes.
  • Work with Enterprise Tax to obtain certificates of tax residency from the Canadian Revenue Authority.

  • Maintain and build CPPIB’s tax knowledge relevant to capital markets investments globally. Monitor changes to tax laws and practices impacting capital markets investments globally and communicate changes to the organization and work with impacted teams implement required changes to our operations
  • Advise Investment Teams and Investment Operations on tax compliance requirements related to trading activity (i.e. dividend equivalent and FATCA reporting)
  • Improve and adjust CPPIB’s internal tax polices / guidelines to ensure they are kept current and relevant given the evolving nature of CPPIB’s capital market investments
  • Qualifications

  • LL.B. / LL.M or JD OR an accounting designation
  • Signifcant tax advisory experience with a focus on capital markets
  • Understanding of capital markets products, globally
  • Strong inter personal and communication skills; ability to form an independent point of view and articulate it in a clear and concise manner in written memorandums and in verbal presentations to tax colleagues and senior investment professionals and department leaders
  • Ability to build and retain strong relationships with senior-level investment and operations personnel
