Purpose :

The Application Developer & Business Systems Administrator is a specialist role in the field of application development and business systems for various business operations at York University.

The role provides top-tier support and day to day administration for application development, integration, and design of various in-house developed (original) and 3rd party applications and web administrative applications, sites, and services information applications, used by UIT clients, across the University.

As well, this role researches current trends and needs and provides solutions on application requirements, development, and design.

Education :

University degree in a related field, such as Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering or an equivalent of 4 years recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks.

This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined below.

Experience :

Seven (7) years of current and relevant application development experience as follows :

  • Experience developing for a university business environment preferred,
  • Advanced experience working with specialized systems and creating unique applications for an academic business environment.
  • Advanced experience with data modeling and design, object-oriented analysis and design, and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
  • Experience with providing technical direction, instruction, and training.
  • Skills : Technical Skills :

    Technical Skills :

  • Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of complex systems, methodologies and concepts including, but not limited to, business applications, business analysis, system design, and application development tool sets, such as C#.
  • Net, VB.Net, ASP.Net, ADO.Net, XML, SOAP, XSLT, Mobile Technology, Java Servlets, JSP, ASP, HTML, DHTML, CSS, Visual Studio.

  • Advanced knowledge of .Net Framework and Compact Framework technology, JavaScript (server and client), Java, IIS, Apache, security issues related to web application design and implementation relational database technology (Oracle, MS SQL, Access), and SQL programming (T-SQL, PL / SQL), C / C++, LDAP.
  • Also requires strong application security knowledge especially for multitier application.
  • Other Skills :

  • Strong written and oral communications skills and good time management skills.
  • Detail oriented with solid analytical, troubleshooting, and organizational and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work well with others and to develop / maintain productive business relationships.
  • Ability to effectively plan, prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and work under pressure.
  • Ability to work with ill-defined client specifications to understand and develop requirements and / or re-engineer existing.
  • Self-sufficient in prioritizing individual work, meeting deadlines, forecasting efforts with minimal guidance and direction.
  • Strong customer service orientation with ability to assess the operational significance of an opportunity or a problem, skilled at using tact and diplomacy when dealing with clients in difficult situations.
  • Strong research skills to stay current with emerging trends and technologies and make sound recommendations for in-house or purchased solutions.
  • Additional Notes :

    This position requires the candidate to produce a verification of degree(s), credentials(s), or equivalencies from accredited institutions and / or international equivalents at the time of interview.

    Hours of work : Monday to Friday, 8 : 30am to 4 : 30pm.Summer : Monday to Thursday, 8 : 30am to 4 : 30pm, Friday, 8 : 30am to 3 : 30pm.

    Overtime may be necessary during peak periods. On call hours may be required on a rotating basis and the incumbent will be required to carry cell phone.

    Peak periods : Project dependent, e.g., during upgrades and implementation of new systems Vacation restriction : During crucial upgrade and project implementation phases
