Reporting to the Vice President, Indigenous Business and Relations, and working with the Director, Indigenous Relations, the Indigenous Relations Coordinator will uphold Stantec’s corporate Indigenous Relations Practice and support the development and maintenance of Stantec’s Indigenous Relations program.
This position will work collaboratively with operational and functional services leadership across the organization to deliver on Indigenous Relations goals including : Indigenous staff recruitment and retention, engagement with Indigenous communities and organizations and strengthening internal awareness of Indigenous cultures, histories, and issues.
The Indigenous Relations Coordinator will support the organization’s approach to fostering and building on existing relationships with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and businesses.
The Indigenous Relations Coordinator will collaborate with Stantec’s business developers, sector leaders and marketing personnel and will assist with new relationship development and client interface.
This position will also help support the delivery of Indigenous-related project work and Indigenous inclusion components of Stantec projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
Support, guide and develop resources for Indigenous cultural competency, cultural awareness training, and related corporate workplace programs and initiatives.
Participate in corporate activities relating to Indigenous Relations including Indigenous recruitment and retention.
Promote Indigenous cultural awareness within Stantec and participate in the roll out of our Indigenous Relations programming and continuous engagement activities.
Contribute to Stantec’s Progressive Aboriginal Relations Certification with the Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business.
Interface with Stantec’s Indigenous Connections ERG to plan and execute on Indigenous-focused events.
Participate in short and long-range planning, establishing organizational priorities.
Contribute to strategic operational plans and objectives and effectively communicate with team members.
Engage and seek collaboration with national and global leaders in Indigenous engagement to inform strategy and practice, gaining an understanding of trends and developments and how they may impact Stantec, our clients, and our partners.
Provide advice and guidance to leadership and management teams on Indigenous affairs and relationships.
Represent Stantec at industry events, conferences, symposia, including as a speaker or panelist.
Create and maintain effective working relationships with Stantec business developers, relationship managers, and account managers working on Indigenous focused projects and initiatives.
Support Stantec practitioners to develop effective, respectful and sustainable relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations and businesses, developing an understanding of their needs, priorities and activities so that Stantec can continue to grow as a thought leader and solution provider.
Work closely with Stantec’s Indigenous Partnerships Team, collaborating on business and community initiatives.
Build strong and effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders such as, clients, industry partners and associations, business unit leaders, peers and the executive leadership team at Stantec.
Travel within Canada will be required.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
In-depth knowledge of the history and present-day context of Indigenous Peoples, including governments and organizations, in Canada, the United States, and / or globally.
Demonstrated experience in Indigenous Relations program development, implementation and management, along with strong communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative environment.
Ability to provide guidance and support on cultural context and protocols.
Experience building partnerships and working with Indigenous businesses, community members, governments, and organizations.
Experience implementing inclusion and diversity strategies.
Must possess a high level of integrity and personal accountability with a focus on engaging staff to perform at their best, while contributing to a team focused on the objectives of the Indigenous Relations program.
Must demonstrate good judgement, ability to deal with complex and sensitive issues and bringing an ability to engage at a strategic level.
Education and Experience
A 4-year university degree with 7 years related experience OR
Technical diploma / certification with extensive years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods. Travel to Indigenous communities, to Stantec offices across Canada and attendance at conferences and events will be required.
