Senior Geologist Exploration, North America

Location : Vancouver, Canada

Teck is looking for a highly motivated and experienced individual to act in a greenfields exploration leadership role within the North American Exploration team, to be based from its corporate office in Vancouver, Canada.

This role will report to Principal Geologist North America, and is responsible and accountable for overseeing the design and execution of greenfields exploration programs in North America.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, experienced exploration professional with strong technical skills with respect to ore deposit geology and greenfields exploration targeting.

Proven leadership skills, a track record of discovery, and the ability to collaborate across the exploration group are imperative for the role.

  • As a key contributor to our greenfields targeting, project acquisition and exploration execution efforts, this role requires a strong background in generative exploration, spanning regional targeting and area selection;
  • opportunity identification and capture; project rating and prioritization; and greenfields exploration project execution.

    Specific exploration experience and expertise with respect to Porphyry Copper, and / or Sediment-Hosted Zinc systems is required.

    A significant component of field work is expected.

    This role will combine the highest standards in environment, health & safety and community relations, coupled with strong commercial acumen, demonstrated team leadership abilities, dynamic management capacity and strong technical expertise to ensure that exploration and geoscience programs are planned, resourced and executed in a safe, efficient and effective manner consistent with Teck’s priorities, culture and values.

    Responsibilities :

  • Lead greenfields exploration efforts in North America, spanning regional targeting and area selection; opportunity identification and capture;
  • project rating and prioritization; and greenfields exploration project execution;
  • Manage greenfields exploration staff comprising multiple teams focused on one or more commodities. Provide coaching, training and leadership in terms of employee development and career planning;
  • Promote the company’s commitment to health and safety, sustainability, the environment, and ensure Teck’s standards are met in the region;
  • Participate in, and provide guidance to, commercial evaluations and liaise with the Exploration management team to identify new exploration opportunities;
  • Maintain a broad national network of industry contacts for technical and commercial intelligence and to promote Teck being a partner of choice to surface and capture new opportunities as they arise;
  • Build a culture of teamwork across all constituents and stakeholders and encourage cooperation and open communication.
  • Qualifications :

  • A minimum of 12 years of geoscience experience, including significant focus on greenfields targeting and exploration
  • Management experience of exploration projects with the ability to lead and have oversight of multiple projects simultaneously
  • A university degree in geoscience or a related field is required. A relevant, advanced degree (MSc or PhD) will be considered an asset
  • Eligibility to work in Canada and the United States is required
  • Eligibility for enrollment as a Professional Geoscientist is required
  • Demonstrated experience of effectively leading and managing people and teams as well as driving change
  • Results oriented with excellent organizational, planning, management and decision making skills
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people
  • Extensive experience in working on Porphyry Copper and / or Sediment Hosted Zinc ore-forming systems and solid understanding of economic geology and orebody genesis
  • Ability to work effectively at a variety of scales and ability to guide exploration activities and evaluations at continent, district or deposit scales
  • English language fluent spoken and written English language skills required
  • Spanish language additional Spanish language skills will be considered an asset
