The Controller for Specialty Foods & Feed (SFF) Canada primarily leads the financial team responsible for our three special crops businesses, but in addition has some corporate responsibilities for the Scoular Canada entity.

This role is responsible for financial and management reporting, including compliance with both Canadian and United States requirements, operational and mark-

to-market accounting, ensuring effective control activities and monitoring processes are in place to mitigate risks, and partnering with the businesses to drive value.

This role will have direct supervision of the regional finance team ( 5 accountants, two different offices) that supports three international businesses with 14 facilities across Canada and the United States.

The selected candidate must have a passion for continuous improvement, developing talent, and partnering with other colleagues to drive profitable growth.

This role will work closely with the SFF Divisional controller as well as US Corporate Controller to help achieve company finance strategy, SFF finance strategy and business strategies.

Job Responsibilities

Financial and Management Reporting

  • Lead monthly close process, ensuring effective processes within and outside finance to support accurate financials (in Canadian and U.
  • S Dollar), including foreign exchange impacts.

  • Partner with corporate accounting to ensure financial reporting compliance, while delivering, analyzing and communicating management reports to business segments.
  • Ensure interim reports accurately reflect business activity and meet both business and company requirements.
  • Ensure proper controls exist and are validated.
  • Operational and Trade Accounting

  • Oversee operational accounting, partnering with facilities to drive effective inventory management and yield improvement, accurate costing, effective cost management, and better operational decision-making.
  • Oversee trading accounting, ensuring positions are within limits and accuracy of daily trader’s PNL and monthly mark-to-market processes.
  • Ensure proper controls exist and are validated.
  • Business Partnering

  • Partner with business colleagues to understand business models, profit drivers, and growth strategies that will lead to enhanced finance solutions and drive improved processes and better decision-making.
  • Provide thought leadership to enhance and achieve strategic objectives.
  • Coach and develop team members to build this same business partnering capability.
  • Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach and develop finance team members.
  • Establish effective performance goals that support achievement of finance and business operating plans.
  • Monitor and provide regular feedback to ensure alignment on performance and development.
  • Corporate Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Canadian and U.S. tax and regulatory reporting.
  • Oversee Corporate cost centers managing cash and foreign currency reporting
  • Manage corporate accounts payable and office related items as necessary
  • Compile financials for the Canadian entity
  • Provide support for various support functions with awareness of local country requirements

  • Support and guide annual budgeting process, partnering with segments and FP&A Lead.
  • Understand underlying systems and ensure team has knowledge and expertise to support business questions and drive improvement.
  • Lead or participate on projects and / or various requests as needed.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business, with seven years of accounting experience, including mark-to-market accounting, preferably in agriculture.
  • Management experience of professional accountants with a proven ability and desire to coach and develop talent.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and influence within and outside of finance.
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Be able to prioritize workload and perform in a fast-paced and challenging environment
  • Understanding Canadian and United States accounting requirements
  • Ability to travel up to 20% as needed
  • Preferred :

  • Agricultural commodity accounting experience.
